The Project Manager, Strategic Initiatives will work in close collaboration with the Dean and Director of Strategic Initiatives to manage a multi-faceted planning and implementation process, including developing and overseeing project plans and implementation strategies for a range of complex projects within the University-wide Initiative on Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery. The projects will vary and may include: facilitation and coordination of work of the University-wide faculty committee; research projects; public and private events such as workshops, exhibitions, films, performances; collaborations with other institutions; commemoration efforts; and other activities that will engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public in understanding and addressing Harvard’s historic relationship with slavery. Administratively, the Project manager will report to the Director of Strategic Initiatives and work closely with the Dean of the Radcliffe Institute. The Project manager also will work with Institute staff to integrate initiative-related efforts into Radcliffe’s programming.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Establish an overall implementation strategy for executing the Initiative’s program portfolio in collaboration with the Dean and senior Institute staff. Develop clear goals and priorities, set milestones, deliver results in a timely manner, and engage key internal and external constituents to maximize communication, transparency, and commitment to projects.
  • Implement and manage various University and Institute-wide planning committees formed to develop programmatic content. Duties include collaborative planning and managing logistics for Initiative projects with Institute staff, preparing meeting agendas and briefing materials, producing meeting reports, coordinating with committee leadership on priorities, establishing internal and external communication channels related to the committees’ work, tracking progress, and completing meeting follow up.
  • Work closely with and provide project management support to the University-wide faculty committee, participate in committee meetings, proactively manage agendas, communicate committee decisions to appropriate stakeholders, update the committee on project status and variations from schedule or scope.
  • Collaborate and coordinate regularly with groups and partners external to the University, including other higher education institutions. Manage external vendors and consultants as needed.
  • Provide overall administrative oversight for the Initiative including management of program-related budgets. Provide benchmarking as needed, perform program-related research, analyze data to inform activities, and report on relevant data and metrics.
  • Collaborate with the communications department to catalog the progress and outputs of the Initiative on the Radcliffe Institute website; contribute to writing content for the website, social media, and publications.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises staff, students, and/or interns as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years’ experience leading complex projects in a fast-paced, team-oriented, highly visible environment where many competing priorities must be managed simultaneously.

Additional Qualifications

The successful candidate will be strategic, proactive, highly organized, and a direct communicator; will have demonstrated ability to write and present quickly, concisely, objectively, and accurately; and will have proven planning and organizational skills. Given that this is a new position, a spirit of flexibility and adaptability is key.

In addition, the following standards will generally define the successful incumbent: Works well under pressure and handles stress constructively; takes initiative and ownership of projects; accepts feedback and direction; creatively solves problems; possesses excellent facilitation skills, discretion, and oral and written communication skills.

Successful track record as a senior project manager in the private sector, major foundations, or institutions of higher education will be reviewed favorably.
