America Walks is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advances safe, accessible, equitable and enjoyable places to walk and move by providing resources to effectively advocate for change. We are the only national organization dedicated solely to building a diverse and powerful voice to advance walking and walkability. We engage with a network in all 50 states of over 35,000 individuals and 700 allied organizations to provide training, support, resources and a national voice for walking and the creation of walkable communities. America Walks is on solid financial footing with six staff.

Our movement is at a critical juncture. There is growing demand for walkable places, as well as an urgent need to prevent pedestrian fatalities and to increase awareness of the importance of walking to meet key societal goals such as public health, economic success, mobility, environmental quality and equity. America Walks next Executive Director will continue to activate our network and grow the scope and influence of the organization and our movement. They will seize the opportunity to empower every community in America to become walkable, with a deep commitment to be inclusive and eliminate persistent barriers faced by people of color, persons with disabilities and other marginalized or discriminated populations.

POSITION OVERVIEW

America Walks seeks an experienced dynamic professional to serve as Executive Director. Reporting to the America Walks Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for America Walks administration, programs and execution of its mission. The Executive Director must be a strong team-oriented leader prepared to collaborate with staff and organizational partners to grow the national walking movement and elevate the importance of walking, moving and walkability among individuals, organizations and decision-makers. Candidates must demonstrate fundraising success, persuasive public speaking and writing skills, an understanding of advocacy and passion for the mission of America Walks.

This position will include overall responsibility for strategic vision and the success of America Walks programs, fundraising to sustain and grow the organization, overseeing staff performance and development, and working with the Board to maximize organizational reach and ensure accountability and fiscal responsibility. They will work from their own office in the United States. Frequent travel is required, comprising about 20-25% of work time. Salary will be $100,000-$125,000 depending on experience, qualifications and location.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Management:

– Lead strategic planning and program development to accomplish America Walks mission.

– Lead, coach and develop America Walks staff as a collaborative, high-performance team. Improve human resources policies and practices to help attract and retain top quality staff.

– Ensure effective systems to track organizational progress and evaluate programs that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders and constituents.

– Provide consistent management of accounting and administration, fundraising, communications and systems.

– Actively engage and energize partner organizations, local and regional walking champions, board members, special committees and funders.

– Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; seek board involvement in informing and implementing the strategic plan, fundraising and organizational development.

Fundraising & Communications:

– Expand and diversify revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing operations and sustainable growth to meet strategic organizational ambitions.

– Ensure accountability for grant and contract deliverables.

– Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand and greater reach in furthering the mission.

– Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities for America Walks.

Partners and Partnerships:

– Represent America Walks and the walking movement as a visible and impactful leader in coalitions, conferences, and professional meetings. Provide leadership for a more effective and integrated active transportation advocacy movement.

– Build relationships with new partners who are positioned to advance the organization and its mission and develop innovative new ways to engage and activate all partner organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Candidates must have 7+ years of managerial experience with both programming and staff. Successful applicants will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. An advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus. Candidates must demonstrate a multi-year track record of fundraising success, persuasive public speaking and writing skills, an understanding of advocacy, and passion for the mission of our organization.
