Purpose:
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate (NSED) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applicants for the Division Director of the Fusion Energy Division (FED). This position reports to the NSED Associate Laboratory Director (ALD). The incumbent will be responsible for leading and managing the science and technology capabilities within the Division consistent with existing programmatic missions and emerging opportunities, and for establishing and implementing strategies for future directions. The FED performs research and development (R&D) that provides fundamental understanding of fusion-environment phenomena and also develops technologies that are needed to enable the deployment of fusion energy systems. FED operates and is establishing capabilities and facilities that are required to meet its mission. Additionally, FED personnel engage in collaborations, both domestic and international, to advance fusion science and technology. FED is committed to leadership class R&D that integrates the division’s comprehensive staff expertise, strategic resources, and facility capabilities to address the needs of the sponsor community, while also leveraging the broader ORNL capabilities to maximize the scientific output of the laboratory.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership that focuses and integrates the Division towards science and technology goals consistent with the programmatic missions of NSED and the Laboratory.
- Provide direct and/or supervise direct point-of-contact program management interface to sponsoring organizations.
- Collaborate with management peers to assist the ALD in defining and implementing strategic programmatic R&D missions for NSED and the Laboratory.
- Partner and collaborate with other U.S. and international laboratories and universities to advance nuclear science and engineering. Represent ORNL before advisory committees.
- Emphasize the scientific productivity and reputation of FED through publications, intellectual property development, and engagement of staff in external organizations.
- Execute line management responsibilities including supervision of group leaders, budget and business planning, salary planning, staff recruitment and development, employee relations, and performance management.
- Serve as the division work authority, striving to implement a culture within the workplace that is attentive to the identification of hazards and responsive to providing controls and processes to address the hazards.
Qualifications Required
Qualified candidates will have a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or related technical field with at least 15 years experience in a nuclear-related R&D environment. It is preferred that candidates have line organization management experience at the group or division level (or equivalent).
Candidates for this position must have strong leadership and business management skills with a proven track record of communication through technical publications, development and execution of a nuclear-related R&D vision and strategy, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills that can interact effectively with a broad spectrum of people and issues in a fast-paced R&D environment.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
