Job Summary
The Director for Pre-Professional and Career Advising is responsible for advancing the school’s overall strategic goals for career placement and acceptance of undergraduates into professional programs. This position in the School of Science Pre-Professional and Career Preparation Office (PREPS) is accountable for the implementation of effective marketing, career counseling and pre-professional advising that directly contributes to recruitment, retention and graduation of more than 2,000 science students on the IUPUI campus. This position is the school’s primary representation on the IUPUI Career Services Council. Within the school, this position, oversees the administration, development, evaluation and reporting on Career Planning operations, which include placement, internships, workshops, recruiting events etc. This position is responsible for long range strategic planning including plan development, implementation and evaluation.
Leadership and Strategic Management of the School of Science PREPs Office: Develop and implement successful practices for career counseling and pre-professional advising. Create programs and procedures based on assessment outcomes, set and modify priorities based on school and campus strategic goals, and ensure that the PREPs Office is meeting the expectations of internal and external constituents. Manage all operational aspects of the PREPs office, staff and its budget. Supervise staff that is responsible for such activities as advising, teaching, workshop facilitation, etc. This includes hiring, training, task assignment and evaluation.
Engage and Collaborate with Internal Constituents: Supervise staff who oversee outreach to students through marketing and advertising with methods such as classroom presentations, promotional tables, collaboration with campus organizations and School of Science student organizations, and communication with faculty and staff. Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports. Collaborate with faculty and staff on curriculum matters related to career and pre-professional development and internship opportunities. Supervise the planning, coordination, and implementation of school events that prepare students for employment, graduate, or professional school. Supervise the development, teaching, and assessment of career planning and pre-professional preparation courses.
Develop Successful Partnerships for Job Placement and Professional School Opportunities: Successfully prospect and develop ongoing beneficial relationships with employers and professional schools to provide employment and continued educational opportunities for students/alumni and partnerships for the school. Provide oversight of credit-bearing internship opportunities and other experiential opportunities with regard to campus wide initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree and three years of experience working in career services, academic advising, or student services.
Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and supervisory skills. Understanding of career development issues affecting students within the School of Science and able to identify and analyze trends in the profession. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in an area such as student affairs/college student personnel, counseling, education, or human resources.
