The Department of Labor and Industry is seeking a highly motivated and skilled professional to work as a full-time Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) Safety Director who will be responsible for the management of the Occupational Safety Compliance Program through enforcement of safety and health regulations. This position is located in the agency’s Richmond Headquarters Office. The VOSH Safety Director will develop strategic plans and guidelines to accomplish the statutory and grant requirements. He/she will design and implement inspection systems to effectively enforce the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health laws, rules, and regulations. In addition, the VOSH Safety Director will be responsible for assessing the effectiveness of program operations and supervising the Regional Safety Directors. Provides the legislature and public with information and interpretations. Manages the development of Regulatory Standards for adoption by the Commissioner and Safety and Health Codes Board. In addition, this position manages financial resources in compliance with the requirements of the OSHA 23g Grant. This position is located at the Headquarters office in Richmond.
- Minimum qualifications include:
- Considerable knowledge of/experience with the principles and practices of occupational safety and health.
- Considerable knowledge of/experience with applicable state and federal standards.
- Considerable experience in the management of large programs, preferably occupational safety and/or health.
- Ability to plan, organize, implement, and direct a statewide program.
- Ability to manage professional, clerical, and technical staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Preferred qualifications include:
- A degree (or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience) in the area of safety and/or health management, industrial engineering, or a related field.
- Certification in a safety or health discipline such as CSP, CIH, CSM, CHSI, OHST, CHST, etc.
- Experience working in, supervising, or managing OSHA or state plan activities.
- Considerable knowledge of/experience with policy development and implementation.
- Special requirements include:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to occasionally travel overnight.
- Ability to perform moderate physical activity that includes, but is not limited to: climbing stairs and ladders, bending, walking up and down inclines, occasionally lifting and carrying loads up to 30 pounds, etc.
- The selected candidate must:
o successfully complete a criminal background investigation.
o complete and submit an annual Statement of Personal Economic Interest.
o successfully complete a physical evaluation through the agency’s authorized health screening vendor, which includes an alcohol and drug screening
o successfully serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment if beginning employment as an original hire or re-employment.
The starting salary range is $60,209 – $88,000 annually, plus the State’s benefits package. Please note that salary is only negotiable within the advertised salary range. Interview candidates may be required to demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance of the work.
