We are seeking a seasoned Global HR Director (HRD) based out of our Washington DC location to design and enable our 700 colleagues for IB’s exciting future. The position reports to the Director General of the IB.
The IB operates five offices around the world in (1) Cardiff, Wales, (2) Den Haag, Netherlands, (3) Geneva, Switzerland (Foundation office), (4) Washington DC, USA and (5) Singapore. The IB is an end-to- end supplier of three types of services:
- Educational philosophy, curricular standards and guidelines for schools.
- Assessment services developed, delivered and assessed worldwide to students.
- Services to schools that include development and maintenance of teaching and learning though authorization, evaluation, and professional development of educators.
The HRD direct reports are:
- Four Heads of HR (one in each major office) responsible for the HR operations along with 9 Associate Managers and Associates.
- A shared services team that includes a Head, Compensation & Benefits, a lead for HR Analytics, an executive Assistant to the Director and a Senior Manager of a global talent team including a Manager, global recruiter and an associate
Job Summary:
We are seeking a seasoned HR professional who will partner with the Senior Leadership Team to establish a people focused organization that works as one across the globe with a strategy aligned to the IB values. The Global HR Director is also the Director General’s delegate in reporting to the Human Resources Committee of the IB Global Board of Governors and a member of IB’s extended leadership team.
Working closely with the Director General, senior leaders and the Board’s HR committee, the IB pre- sents the potential candidate with a unique opportunity to create and execute a people strategy for our worldwide multi-cultural team serving a world of schools. Our work is energizing and inspiring, and the HR Director has an opportunity to shape a vibrant people strategy to make the IB known as a great place to work and an IB that delivers high standards expected of its staff.
The HRD will work collaboratively to establish policies and practices for seamless international processes that ensure staff engage as one-IB operating in alliance with local laws for a common international purpose. Key accountabilities are:
HR Strategy & Execution:
The HRD will lead and fully execute key initiatives for an effective HR strategy, leading on all key people processes including. performance management, recruitment, retention and total rewards strategies, succession planning, and learning and development programs.
Organisational & People Development:
Create and implement a variety of organisational development initiatives through but not limited to learning and training programs to support the needs of the organisation and employees.
- Ensures utilisation of best in class development programs with a high return on investment across the organisation, introducing state of the art online learning tools
- Provides guidance on the implementation of training and mentorship programs to retain, inspire, and build leaders at all levels
Workforce Planning, Talent Acquisition and Talent Retention:
- Benchmark against human resource/talent best practices and implements initiatives that are innovative and aimed at continuous improvement to support a dynamic, evolving international organization
- Create and execute a vision for attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional educational talent to build a strong IB to deliver to schools
- Annual benchmarking of salaries, Hay grades, benefits and pay review to align with global IB and local market conditions and laws in each of the locations
- Responsible for optimal international organisational structures developed with deep knowledge of IB’s business and specific country market conditions. Advises on changes and change management in org structures as needed.
Ensures global processes for onboarding & orientation are effective to ensure a sense of belonging for new and existing staff throughout the IB organization
Employee Relations, Employee Engagement & Employee Wellbeing:
Manage employee relations to develop viable initiatives/ interventions to create a positive and appreciative work culture
- Accurately and objectively diagnoses organization issues, develops solutions, solves problems, and implements action plans to address these issues
- Develops and executes initiatives to improve Organizational Health and Employee Wellbeing
- Cultivates strong employee relations to foster an inclusive, safe, and positive people culture. Builds trust with employees and deals with situations of conflict within the tenets of IB’s code, values, and applicable laws.
- Manages Employee Engagement Surveys/Pulse Surveys including analysis and creating a plan of action to address identified concerns.
HR Policies and HR Analytics:
- Guide leaders and employees on policies ensuring consistent implementation
- Leverage data and analytics to uncover insights about trends on employee turnover, engagement and opportunities to enhance retention and satisfaction
HR Budget Management:
- Working with the Finance team is responsible for inputs to the IB’s staff budget and is responsible for the HR budget
Compliance:
- Ensure that across the global centres where the IB is located, that local labour legislation is always adhered to and that all key leaders and managers are kept abreast of changing legislation through ongoing training and upskilling.

- Comfortable in providing direct input in a positive and respectful manner to leadership to give one’s opinion based on experience and expertise as a subject matter expert.
- Ability to successfully and effectively lead an HR team of diverse HR professionals from different professional backgrounds, capitalising on this diversity and supporting their strengths to best serve the IB, thereby projecting an HR team presence that is professional, agile, caring and people focused, while elevating standards and competencies.
