NATURE OF WORK:
Manages and performs all aspects of barn management for a nonprofit organization. Supervises staff and maintains a cooperative relationship with staff, volunteers, and clients. Responsible for ensuring 24x7x365 care of herd, as well as creation and adherence to organizational budget.
If qualified, Equine Services Director will also teach 2-4 Adaptive classes a week as assigned by the Adaptive Services Director.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
This is a management position, directly supervising and scheduling barn staff, leading by example, educating and advising/counseling as needed. This position ensures that all LBTRC animals receive adequate care including, but not limited to: required daily feeding, water, turnout, and schooling. Additionally, the position manages supplements, medications, regular injections, and services provided through veterinary and farrier support.
MAJOR JOB DUTIES:
- Available for emergencies after hours.
- Calm, clear, decisive management of LBTRC animal emergencies.
- Supervision, training, mentoring, hiring and firing of barn / stable employees and volunteers.
- Responsible for evaluation and revision of herd composition (horse acquisition/retirement).
- Responsible for facilitating the Horse Council and leading members to successfully fulfill its charter.
- Creation and adherence to Barn/Equine budget.
- Ensures smooth day-to-day operations, including clean stalls, correct feeding, turn out, blanketing, and schooling.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of turnout, stall assignments, feeding, medication, and staffing schedules.
- Orders, maintains, and tracks medications, supplies & feed inventory.
- Arranges and oversees vet visits, worming & shots; schedules and supervises farrier visits.
- Manages rehabilitation, and dispensing & applying of prescribed medications and treatments.
- Manages removal of equine waste from property, as well as cleaning and maintenance of barn facility and equipment including paddocks, arenas, and barn; ensures facilities are clean and safe for horses and humans.
- Performs routine inspections of barn, paddocks, and arenas. Ensures all issues are reported and repaired within reasonable time frame, occasionally performs repairs as directed by Facilities Manager.
- Fosters and preserves a positive relationship with all stakeholders: internal and external to Little Bit.
- Mentors staff and volunteers in the care and training of program horses and their behavior issues as requested.
Desired Qualifications
Education:
College training / degree desirable. May be substituted for considerable Equine or Barn Management experience. Graduate of accredited therapeutic riding course and/or PATH, International certified instruction program desired.
Experience and Knowledge:
Minimum of 5 years of related experience in stable / equine management, including skills listed in Major Job Duties section of this description.
Skills and Abilities:
Able to recognize and address early signs of lameness or muscle soreness, and the ability to recognize early signs of equine distress, such as colic, dehydration, etc., and take appropriate action is essential. Experience body clipping, transporting horses, and operating a tractor and power tools (raking arenas and emptying manure spreader) is highly desirable.
Able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others. Experience with Microsoft Office and Outlook is required. Must have CPR/First Aid card.
Must be willing to work a schedule that includes some evenings and may include weekends. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
Able to lift 50 pounds and perform hard physical labor for up to six hours daily. Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a valid resident/work permit and maintain a current Washington State driverâs license. Must complete and pass a Washington State Criminal History Report.
