Job Summary:
The Business Development group at Cepheid is part of Global Strategic Marketing and has responsibility for collaborations across a variety of external partners including pharmaceutical, biotech, clinical research, and emerging medical technology companies. The Director, Business development will drive growth through new partnerships & collaboration agreements and will work to make Cepheid the partner of choice in molecular diagnostics. A key element of the position will include partnering Cepheid’s products and technology across Infectious Disease, Virology, Sexual Health, Oncology, and with companies developing emerging precision therapies. Central to the role will be a Hunter/Seeker skill set with the ability to facilitate new business and close transactions.
Job Description
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Manages, selects, evaluates and negotiates business development and partnership
agreements for Cepheid with a focus on pharmaceutical and biotech collaborations.
- Leads and/or supports contract negotiations with external parties on new collaborations
- Evaluates new business opportunities, markets, and technologies to support Cepheid’s
corporate development initiatives, including Point of Care, Companion Diagnostics, and
biopharma Clinical Trials.
- Identifies and engages on new leads and/or supports negotiations on new agreements
- Prospects, analyzes, and solicits new business development collaborations at industry
trade shows, medical conferences, biopharma partnering conferences, and via relevant
databases
- Manages new business development efforts in companion diagnostics including
Oncology
- Implements distribution and licensing agreements, coordinates with partner as well as
internal cross-functional Cepheid resources
- Prepares and delivers presentations to both internal and external partners relative to
business development deals and strategies.
- Works cross functionally with finance, legal, and regulatory to structure successful
partnerships
- Alliance manages key aspects of business development partnerships & collaborations
post deal

- Minimum Requirements:
Education & Experience
o Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of related work experience OR
o Master’s degree in field with 6+ years of related work experience OR
o Doctoral degree in field with 3+ years of work experience.
o MBA Degree Preferred
Career Experience & Skills
- Business development experience in Diagnostics, Pharmaceuticals, CRO, or other Life
Science business
- Demonstrated ability to close partnership deals, with track record of success– Deal Sheet
- Ability to apply critical/strategic thinking to each opportunity
- Experience structuring collaborations and managing alliances
- Must possess the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all internal and
external partners and stakeholders
- Working knowledge of product development, regulatory, and scientific affairs as it relates
to pharmaceuticals and molecular diagnostics
- Strong presentation skills
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally
- Travel up to 50%
