Position Purpose
The role will work with and support the Assistant General Counsel, Legal Operations and Planning VP based in Geneva in advising JTI business units on all legal matters affecting JTI’s global operations with the aim of achieving corporate/commercial objectives in a manner that ensures compliance with the law and appropriate management of legal risk as well as to support all functions to find the most optimal way to execute JTIâs strategies and goals in order to sustain business growth. The role will especially focus on JTI’s growing business presence in Spanish speaking parts of the Americas Region working closely with the Regional General Counsel VP Legal based in Miami.

Responsibilities
- Advising on all commercial law matters, including advising on challenging and complex matters which may include acquisitions or mergers in the Americas Region and beyond.
- Identifying, selecting and retaining external counsel and advisors where necessary.
- Building and maintaining strong working relationships within the Americas markets and beyond including the Americas Region and Geneva HQ, and understanding full business needs and strategic plans so as to provide pro-active and valued advice and to enable the company to operate in a manner that is compliant with all applicable laws and regulations particularly in markets where JTI has no dedicated in-house lawyer.
- Work closely with market lawyers and all other functions in providing ongoing legal and strategic advice on legal issues to manage and mitigate legal risk.
- Develop, deploy and manage legal policies and procedures and training as required by Geneva HQ, the Americas Region or as necessary for the markets with no dedicated in-house legal function. This includes but is not limited to establishing and refining internal procedures and programs to help ensure compliance of company’s activities with the applicable laws and global guidelines.
- Advise on competition/anti-trust regulations, sanctions regimes and anti-bribery and corruption legislation. Provision of advice to business to ensure compliance of JTI productsâ packaging layouts/marketing materials/consumer programs etc. with the applicable legal requirements.
- Ensure appropriate corporate governance is in place for JTI’s entities in the Americas Region and beyond, with a focus on markets with no dedicated JTI Legal function.
- Work with the Assistant General Counsel, Legal Operations and Planning VP based in Geneva HQ and the Regional General Counsel VP Legal based in Miami to establish, govern and manage relationships with external legal advisors in particular in Latin American countries where JTI has no dedicated Legal function.
- Ensure the timely and efficient management of litigation instituted by or against JTI especially in Americas markets with no dedicated in-house Legal function.
- Drafting complex but clear and concise documents in both English and Spanish.
- Other duties as assigned by the Assistant General Counsel, Legal Operations and Planning VP based in Geneva HQ and the Regional General Counsel VP Legal based in Miami.
Qualifications and Experience
⢠Law degree, member of Bar Association
- 6+ years of practice in a top law firm or both in a top law firm and in-house
Functional Skills
- Fluent English, Fluent Spanish required
- Advanced PC skills, particularly PowerPoint
- Strong drafting skills (in English and Spanish) and experience of managing transactions are key.
