Job Summary
Reporting to NOC’s Vice President of Marketing, the Marketing Director is responsible for managing all aspects of Nantahala Outdoor Center’s marketing and communications programs. Supported by a core marketing staff, s/he will develop departmental goals and strategy in alignment with the company’s annual objectives and oversee the execution of all strategic marketing plans.This is a collaborative position, working closely with all operational units and the Nantahala Outdoor Center sales team to plan, execute, and report progresson achieving organizational milestones.The successful candidate has 4+ years of proven experience creating and executing strategic B2C marketing and communications plans, ideally with a focus on travel and tourism brands. Core to this role is creativity, collaborative problem solving,and the ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic work environment. A passion for promoting and evangelizing meaningful outdoor experiences is essential.
Responsibilities
Develop, execute, and evaluate comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations plans to grow revenue and enhance NOC’s image and position as an outdoor industry leader.
- Develop the annual marketing budget and maintain oversight of multiple large-scale projects.
- Work closely with internal team members and multiple external partners to direct the development and execution of impactful creative campaigns and media plans that achieve the strategic goals and financial objectives of the company.
- Oversee media relations programs, ensuring regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests.
- Plan, communicate, and execute a strategic marketing calendar that balances the needs of all NOC business units.
Manage and develop a team of marketing personnel.
- Develop marketing staff by providing information / educational opportunities and experiential growth opportunities in accordance with allotted time and budgets.
- Facilitate employee performance reviewsand create a department culture based on open feedback, discussion, and skill growth.
- Set direct report goals and objectives.
Oversee the creation and ongoing management of NOC marketing assets.
- Oversee the editorial direction and production of all marketing materials including publications, database marketing, videos, brochures, menus,and campus signage.
- Oversee all NOC web properties, including the ongoing development of web assets and strategic digital initiatives.
- Coordinate with vendors and agencies to create and maintain digital and print assets.
- Ensure consistent communication of NOC’s image and position to all constituencies. Oversee company voice, messaging, and brand presence.
Act as a key advisor to the Nantahala Outdoor Center Executive Team, providing valuable research, insight, and direction to drive average visit value and lifetime value of NOC guests.
- Provide short and long-term forecasts and reports through market research, analysis, and interpretation of guest, competitor, and company data.
- Maintain a pulse on competitor activity and industry trends.
- Advise on the evolution of products and services through acquiring and analyzing data, consulting with internal and external services, and overseeing customer feedback collection.
- Advise on pricing structures, discount strategies, and product mix.
Budgeting & Planning
- Maintain and balance an annual marketing operating budget.
- Working with the Vice President, President, and CFO along with departmental heads, annually participate in end of season reviews.
- Develop marketing strategies and budgets that meet and exceed revenueplans for the upcoming season.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4+ years of demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design and execution of B2C specific marketing, communications, and public relations strategies. Travel and tourism industry experience preferred.
- Track record of ideating, creating, and managing impactful creative campaigns and brand assets.
- Deep understanding of paid and earned media, budgeting, consumer and market research, pricing strategy, and data-driven marketing.
- Proven success in a collaborative, team-based work environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to create and edit copy formultiple mediums / channels.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks on a departmental scale.
- Documented experience managing budgets.
Education Qualifications and Experience Desired:
- 4+ years of demonstrated marketing experience in similar roles.
- B.S / B.A in Marketing or related field is strongly preferred.
Tools, Equipment & Conditions:
- Ability to work a flexible schedule of various shifts to include days, nights,weekends and holidays as seasonally necessary.
- Ability to familiarize self with Nantahala Outdoor Center’s products, services, and employees across adventure, retail, and hospitality units.
- Travel to NOC’s main location in Bryson City and Outpost locations across the South East on a regular basis.
- Position requires sitting in a stationary position for lengths of time, standing for long periods of time, and lifting / moving heavy objects.
- Often times odd hours and weekends are needed to support operations from Mid-April through early October.
Primary Work Location:
- NOC Administrative office located in Asheville, NC or NOC’s main location in Bryson City, NC
