Open Position – General Manager (Full-time Seasonal) 2020 Tennis Season
The Lincoln Park Tennis Association (LPTA) is seeking a full-time General Manager for its seasonal tennis facility in Chicago, Ill. LPTA operates a well-established and thriving outdoor tennis facility with six private and four public Har-Tru tennis courts in Lincoln Park. The facility serves the 240-member Lincoln Park Tennis Association and the public Diversey Tennis Center (DTC). The facility is open for daylight play from sunrise to sunset, mid-April to mid-October.
Position Overview
The General Manager is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of the private LPTA and the public DTC. Reporting to the LPTA Board President, the General Manager runs an operation that meets the interests of club members and their guests, employees, the City of Chicago, and the public court tennis players.
Duties include managing the annual budget, overseeing facility maintenance programs, engaging LPTA members, implementing service-level improvements, interfacing with the Chicago Parks District (CPD), marketing the public and private tennis programs, supervising staff, and ensuring the security and protection of LPTA and DTC assets. The General Manager is required to be onsite a minimum of 40 hours per week starting in early May and continuing into mid-October, with some additional pre- and post-season responsibilities. Compensation for the position includes salary and a merit-based bonus, plus other potential revenue opportunities.
Responsibilities:
- Manage all pre-season, in-season and post-season activities to ensure all tennis courts, facilities, grounds, and related equipment are clean, well- maintained, secure and in good working condition.
- Establish and maintain a supportive business relationship with Chicago ParksDistrict (CPD) to ensure LPTA’s contractual obligations are met to CPD’s satisfaction. This includes CPD-sponsored youth tennis activities delivered by the LPTA pro staff.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff, and ensure adequate staffing levels for all club activities.
- Plan and manage LPTA’s annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors, including revenue generation and expense management.
- Ensure members, guests, tennis pros and customers at the facility have a consistently high-quality experience with each visit.
- Ensure timely communication with members by providing a daily weather and court conditions update as well as club event information.
- Promote the LPTA and DTC to all potential member candidates and work to integrate new members into the club’s formal and informal networks.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively with members, guests, staff, board members and city officials to realize the annual goals of the tennis club.
- Display a collaborative and inclusive leadership style that conveys a positive attitude and seeks to resolve conflicts in a professional and tactful manner.
- Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service.
- Possess basic computer and email skills, and comfort with social media and tennis booking/club management software.
- Integrity, enthusiasm and an exemplary work ethic.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge or appreciation of the game of tennis.
- Previous experience as a manager in a customer-facing business.
- Experience in tennis or hospitality management or a related field.
