Executive Director

The National Center for Victims of Crime seeks a strategic, committed leader to serve as its Executive Director.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Center’s Executive Director will serve as the organization’s most senior external advocate and fundraiser, overseeing the organization’s projected growth. The Executive Director will also oversee organizational strategy, enabling the Center to continue to deliver consistent, high-quality operating programs, research, and expert assistance in pursuit of justice reform.

As the organization’s primary leader, the Executive Director will support the National Center’s leadership team and staff to achieve exceptional results and impact at scale. In addition, the Executive Director will help chart the Center’s course into the future with an eye toward strategic planning. The Executive Director will directly manage a senior leadership team and an organization of over 25 staff with the majority working in VA and Washington D.C. with a few remote employees.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Strategic Leadership
    – Serve as the Center’s senior-most executive, ensuring the organization continues to excel in its current work, while overseeing the organizational culture and infrastructure necessary for the National Center to launch new high-impact initiatives.
  • Team Management – Lead, with the support of the senior leadership team and staff, all operations, with ultimate accountability for the success of the organization, building and mentoring a high-performing team committed to advancing the National Center’s mission.
  • Financial Oversight – Supervise the development of financial modeling.

Coordinate and lead annual budget reviews, monthly and quarterly reviews, and periodic forecast updates to ensure services and funding relationships are robust enough to meet or exceed strategic goals and objectives. Instrumental in the development of recommendation of an annual budget for BOD approval. Provides information and justifications for BOD in its budgetary review and approval process.


  • Relationship Management and Cultivation
    – Serve as the leading voice for the organization, enhancing the Center’s partnerships with key stakeholders.


  • Marketing
    – Oversees the design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of NCVC programs and services. Explores and pursues expansion and/or strengthening of the organization’s programs, products, services and national visibility. Assures the organization and its mission, programs and service are consistently presented in a strong positive image to the community, organizations, governmental agencies, and the media.

Develops and maintains good working relationships with regional decision-makers, public interest groups, businesses, community leaders, and the media, assuring that a consistent and technically accurate source of information is provided; responds to requests for information.


  • Fundraising
    – Drive fundraising strategies and activities that lead to organizational sustainability and growth, ensuring the engagement of the Center’s existing donor base while cultivating new supporters among government, corporate, foundation, and individual funders; engage other staff leaders and provide them with the support they need so that they can be part of driving successful fundraising


  • Program Leadership
    – Provide vision, oversight, and direction, ensuring continuous improvement of program delivery


  • Board
    of Directors Assist the Chairperson, the Executive Committee and the entire Board of Directors of the National Center in leading the work of the National Center.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Relevant Masters, doctorate degree or law degree.
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional work experience, including five years in a significant leadership role preferably with a non-profit.
  • Outstanding proven organizational leadership skills, with an ability to articulate a clear and inspiring vision for the National Center while managing and mentoring the organization’s staff.
  • Strong financial management skills
  • Strong fund development, marketing and public relations experience to successfully engage stakeholders, including funders, business partners, policy makers, media and communities.
  • Track record of creating and sustaining an organizational culture that fosters fairness and inclusiveness
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with a track record of developing solutions to organizational issues in the face of complexity and ambiguity
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop strong relationships across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders, and to influence leaders in the private, public, and non-profit sectors
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills with the ability to serve as a strong external voice for the National Center and its work
  • Strong appetite to lead fundraising for the National Center; successful track record of working effectively with a range of funders
  • Experience overseeing budgets and understanding financials, with the capacity to allocate resources strategically and manage spending effectively
  • Integrity, with a commitment to ethically and empathically serving individuals and families involved with the justice system
