Allendale Columbia School (AC), a diverse, co-educational, independent school serving over 340 students in grades nursery through 12, seeks an experienced and dynamic educator and leader to join a team of professionals responsible for creating an innovative, authentic, and student-centered program. This appointment begins in February 2020.
At Allendale Columbia School, the Center for Global Engagement is a priority of the strategic plan and includes a Global Diploma program, cultural immersion and academic-based international travel opportunities, national and international partnership development, etc. The Director of Global Engagement oversees this Center and works to ensure the curriculum and pedagogy presented to students meets the highest standards of quality and rigor. More specifically, the Director of Global Engagement collaborates with all three Divisions of faculty and reports to the Heads of Lower, Middle, and Upper School. This role demands excellent teaching skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to lead by example and inspire growth and development across the three Divisions if the school. The Director serves as both a model teacher, advocate, and mentor to the other faculty.
This is a leadership position that requires faculty and curriculum oversight, and will also include teaching Upper School courses depending on the skill set of the applicant. Other responsibilities include duties that engage the student body: participating in a family-style lunch, being an advisor, and sponsoring student activities like clubs or other student-run events. In addition, the Director is responsible for leading international trips.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Work to continue and further develop Allendale Columbiaâs Global initiative. This includes helping to forge partnerships overseas and open up opportunities for language exchanges in Spanish, French, and Mandarin;
- Oversee the Global Engagement Scholars who are currently in the Global Engagement Diploma Program and the work they are doing to achieve successful completion of this program;
- Manage the international trips with countries we have already established strong partnerships with and create new partnerships to grow the program and travel opportunities for students;
- Oversee alignment in the nursery through grade 12 language curriculum fostering an atmosphere of professionalism leading to honest and collaborative conversations about teaching strategies, methodologies, content, materials, and assessments in the language program;
- Ensure that the global engagement committee works continuously to meet the needs of global scholars;
- Manage the Center for Global Engagement budget; and
- Teach French language classes as needed (please note: this requirement is dependent on skills and experience).
Qualifications:
- Bachelorâs degree (Masterâs preferable) in French and/or Education;
- Minimum of five years teaching and advising experience in an independent school setting;
- An insatiable desire to learn and collaborate;
- A willingness to design new courses and curriculum and continue to evolve at the speed of the world around us;
- The ability to change and evolve to meet the needs of students and constantly strive to evolve their practice and embrace the spirit of being a learner not a knower.
