The Position
The Wilson County Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) Director will oversee all administrative, operating, sales/marketing, publicity, promotions and advertising functions of the Wilson County Convention and Visitor Bureau. Work involves positioning the community as a premier, year-round visitor destination and positively impacting the area economy through external marketing efforts aimed at select target markets. This position reports to the County Mayor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Manage the day to day activities of the CVB, including general management and coordination of the county tourism efforts. Responsible for program of work, organization structure and procedures budget and finance, staffing, public relations, marketing and planning. Direct and manage staff in the implementation of tourism objectives and policies.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program of Work
Develop strategies, programs, and tourism initiatives with support of the Advisory Board. Formulate for accurate economic impact of local events, inclusive of measuring hotel room nights and accurately measuring tourist impact. Gather competitive rates/quotes of local hotels for groups and other vendors. Coordinates Wilson County’s tourism program and activities with other area programs, state and federal agencies. Scheduling and giving tours for tourist groups, which may include preparing an itinerary and welcome for each group.
Projects and Events Planning
Establishes and maintains ongoing effective communications with governmental leaders, business and cultural institutional leaders, meetings, event planners, and the local/state tourism industry. Works with local committees to establish events and promotion for tourist from surrounding areas. Assisting in the development of a volunteer group for local events. Coordinates special events with other government and civic organizations, if needed.
Tourism
Attend training sessions to local industries on tourist attractions Attends meetings, seminars, conventions, and workshops to further knowledge, stay informed of the changes in the tourism industry, and exchange information.
Prepares and delivers speeches to both local and regional civic and governmental organizations on Tourism.
Designs, develops and conducts familiarization tours of Wilson County for media, leisure & group planners. Responsible for consulting with site directors, staff, and volunteers who serve in connection with historical sites, attractions, hotels, or other tourism related sites. Assist these sites with development of ideas, promotion and marketing in accordance with program of work and marketing plan mission.
Long-Range Planning
The CVB Director is responsible for maintaining continuity and consistency in programming. The CVB Director must use all available resources to anticipate emerging and long-range trends and recommend county programs to address such challenges. Represents the County in joint planning sessions to support & develop an overall destination strategy. Prepares and implements improvement plans; designs and develops educational programs, as needed.
Policy
Keeps abreast of changes in operating philosophies policies and practices of the County and continually reviews department policies to ensure that any changes in County philosophy or practice are appropriately incorporated. Adheres to those policies in the discharge of duties and responsibilities and ensures the same from administrative assistant. Develops and maintains effective organizational and crisis management policies and ensure all CVB activities are implemented within these established policies, guidelines, laws and ethical standards.
Personnel
Works with administrative assistant with regard to training, supervising and evaluating performance. Oversees implementation of discipline and termination procedures for administrative assistant or volunteer members. Assigns additional duties to administrative assistant as necessary to include in-service training programs to meet department goals, enhance staff abilities, and in personal and career growth. Plans and organizes daily work routine by establishing priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Ensures that the administrative assistant updates and maintains social media and website and is proficient in the necessary digital design software.
Finance
Oversee operations of the Wilson County Visitor’s Bureau; Gathers data and prepares annual tourism situation analysis for the CVB Advisory Board, the Board of Commissioners and County Mayor. Develops and supervises the implementation of an annual operating budget and marketing plan, to promote the destination to local, state, regional, national, and international audiences. Prepares quarterly and annual Director reports, annual budget and submits available grant applications for matching funds, that supports these activities and presents information to the Board of Commissioners for approval.
Marketing and Public Relations
Prepares and executes marketing plans; prepares and releases press kit to media and group planners. Participates in radio talk shows; provides current and updated information to the press. Prepares, updates and designs community profiles, photo library, and Wilson County brochures. Develops an awareness program aimed at marketing the county to promote tourism initiatives and stimulate economic development.
Other Activities
Represent Wilson County in tourism related activities, including local, regional, state and national organizations, conferences or meetings, and national conventions that serve to foster the betterment of the Bureau mission. Communicates with CVB Advisory Board, Wilson County Chamber of commerce, and other agencies. Attend monthly meetings of Wilson County Commission and prepare meeting packets. Responds to requests for information on various aspects of economic development in Wilson County.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The CVB Director position requires excellent verbal, written, presentation, communication skills, organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills and an ability to provide leadership. Preferred candidate would have strong budget development skills, demonstrated executive and managerial skills; self-starter who has a high level of initiative with proven leadership abilities. Preferred supervisor experience with ability to recruit, train, and develop staff, if needed.
Detail oriented; able to work independently and meet deadline in multi task environment, proficient in computer skills, displays a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
College graduate with a degree in advertising, marketing, public relations, hospitality services or a closely related field, and multiple years experience related to destination marketing. Tourism, hospitality, sports marketing and/or the convention/visitor industry with progressive responsibility or public relations work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Working knowledge of Wilson County, area history, area attractions and/or fishing and water sports preferred.
