This position is with the Division of Institutions located at Department of Corrections Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. This position will be required to travel to Troy, VA.

Oversees and directs special nursing projects for the Virginia Department of Corrections’ Health Services Unit.

    Main responsibilities for this role are as follows:

  • Policy/procedure review and development
  • Management of special projects as assigned
  • Development of operational efficiency measures for the HQ-Health Service Unit and Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women’s HSU
  • Provide accurate and complete data and information related to surveys on agency’s nursing status and trends
  • Creating and presenting oral and written reports as needed


This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a RN and have an active Virginia RN license.

Knowledge of project management practices, state government agencies, legislative process, criminal justice system, FOIA, and the use of performance measures in government.

Knowledge of institutional/community operations and experience in a correctional setting.

Comprehensive knowledge of policy and procedure and experience in development and/or revision of such.

Knowledge of research & evaluation processes.

Competency to manage and complete multiple, high quality projects on time using demonstrated organizational skills.

Demonstrated ability to use Excel in data analysis.

Demonstrated ability to use presentation software and create/integrate graphs & charts in reports.

Demonstrated competency to communicate technical and general information in a highly effective manner to legislators, executives and agency employees.

Experience using Microsoft programs to develop reports, charts, and graphs to convey technical information.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in an effective manner.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer an advanced degree with major studies in Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Criminal Justice\Criminology, Social Science, Human Resources, Psychology, Statistics or related fields or equivalent training and experience.

Experience in adult correctional settings is preferred.

Prefer experience in analysis of performance measures, organizational development/strategic planning activities and activities involving communications with public or groups of employees, both orally and in writing.
