Working under the supervision of the Library Director, the Head of Public Services provides leadership and vision for coordination of premier-level reference services. The Head of Public Services must evaluate, assess current and future research needs of the library community to ensure that the library is providing quality assistance in a wide and increasingly complex legal atmosphere. The position requires collaboration with the Library Director on collection development, resource selection, and legal research course design. The Head of Public Services hires, trains, and supervises library assistant staff as assigned. The position oversees and develops programs, marketing & outreach, and other patron services to support and promote the law library. This job may also have teaching, service, scholarship, and/or other administrative responsibilities.
- (1) Administrative Services
- Supervise reference services team and research projects.
- Supervise circulation and reserve functions; assist in the training and supervision of student assistants.
- Ensure proper staffing (scheduling) of reference/circulation services.
- Participate in strategic planning, particularly related to public services.
- Collaborate with the Library Director on collection development and selection.
- May have administrative responsibilities pertaining to legal research courses.

(2) Reference & Research Services
- Coordinate/provide research assistance to faculty and students on special topics.
- Coordinate presentations to faculty and students as needed.
- Participate in library reference services rotation.
- Help students develop research skills, to include locating and using library resources.
- Supervise the creation/maintenance of library research guides on areas of law that are of interest to faculty and students.
- Teach students how to identify, refine, and test note/seminar topics, assist students with bluebook citations, and show students how to locate materials.
- May include classroom teaching responsibilities.

(3) Technology Services
- Supervise the maintenance of library webpage and potential social media accounts.
- Supervise the monitoring of new technology and new research databases.
- Collaborate with other departments to promote library services and resources.
(4) All other duties as assigned.
Possesses a Juris Doctor and a Masterâs of Library and Information Science.
Two years to five years.
Great familiarity with legal reference is required.
Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills to help understand, diagnose, and troubleshoot student and staff issues.
Effective at multi-tasking and prioritizing demands in an active environment, particularly during peak times of the school year.
Assists other employees with research, planning, and other interdepartmental duties as needed.
Requires extensive knowledge of contemporary library practices, trends, and emerging technologies, and a commitment to continuous service improvement and innovation.
Demonstrates proficiency in the following software and database applications: Microsoft Office Suite; Adobe; Acrobat; HTML; Innovative Interfaces Millenium; LibGuides; Westlaw Next; Lexis Advance; HeinOnline; ProQuest; InfoTrac; SSRN; BePress; BNA/Bloomberg; Intelliconnect; and other University-sponsored and free databases.
Personnel and project management skills are required.
Job requires repetitively lifting light weight objects where frequent bending or stooping alternates with lighter activities.
Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
Membership in American Assn. of Law Libraries (AALL) and Michigan Assn. of Law Libraries (MichALL)
