POSITION DETAILS

The Office of K-16 Initiatives at CUNY is home to more than a dozen high quality programs that aim to improve the college readiness, high school-to-college transition, and academic success of young people in New York City. The Office of K-16 Initiatives seeks an education professional experienced with building strategic partnerships and developing funding strategies to increase the reach and impact of its college access and success programs as the Director of External Engagement. Reporting to the University Dean for K-16 Initiatives, the Director of External Engagement will provide expertise to build partnerships with external stakeholders and potential funders (including city agencies, community-based organizations, funders, employers, associations and researchers), and maximize opportunities for engagement in key, relevant national and local education-focused fora. As a member of the University Dean’s senior leadership team, the Director of External Engagement will develop and implement a cohesive strategy for K-16 partnerships and a unified approach to organizational identity, branding and outreach materials, to align priorities and communications among internal and external stakeholders and partners in the college access and success sector.

Other key responsibilities include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to University Dean for K-16 Initiatives on external partnerships and engagement activities, ensure that priorities and areas of focus are appropriately set, and ensure that all programs have sustainable funding plans.

  • Partner with the University Dean to shape internal communications to inform and inspire staff about the ways their daily work connects to the mission of K-16 Initiatives.

  • Research and identify prospective funders, build awareness of K-16 programs with appropriate funders, and develop funder communication strategy; provide tools and feedback to program leaders as they build funder relationships and create funding proposals.

  • Guide K-16 program leaders as they develop new, innovative strategies to drive program improvements through partnerships; evaluate potential partnerships for both feasibility and alignment with short & long-term goals.

  • Develop and execute strategies to engage CUNY campus leaders (presidents, provosts, deans, etc.); build relationships with allies and champions on campuses who can help amplify the messages and impact of CUNY K-16 programs.

  • Develop K-16 brand identity among key stakeholders, including students and families, college leaders and faculty, education thought leaders, donors, elected officials, community partners.

  • Identify and maximize opportunities for engagement in national and local conversations on equity, education reform, and other critical issues affecting K-16 programs and students.

  • Develop written materials to support increased awareness of the Office of K-16 Initiatives, including an annual report that outlines program and unit accomplishments.

  • Oversee digital and online media efforts for K-16 programs, supervise K-16 Digital Media Manager and Web Developer, and ensure websites and other media platforms support overall K-16 strategies and engage appropriate stakeholders for all programs.

  • Manage cross-functional projects and ensure that all assigned deliverables are completed with the highest quality and on time.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in a directly related discipline.

  • Eight years’ progressively responsible work experience managing strategic partnerships and developing funding strategies in educational or philanthropic organizations.

  • Broad understanding of public higher education policies and systems, the needs of low-income urban college students, and commitment to promoting college access and success in post-secondary education.

  • Strategic thinker with ability to establish short- and long-term programmatic goals and outcome measures.

  • Strong analytical and organizational and follow-through skills to manage complex budgets, devise and execute work plans, prioritize work, manage multi-site projects, facilitate cross-functional teams, and meet deadlines.

  • Strong leadership and staff management skills with ability to train staff and evaluate work performance timely.

  • Strong interpersonal communication, writing, presentation, negotiation and group facilitation skills.

  • Strong relationship and fiscal management skills with ability to address issues that may arise successfully.

  • Proactive, flexible, and customer focused to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a fast-paced work environment with diverse members of the university community and external constituents.

  • Computer proficiency using administrative, financial or academic programs, systems or databases, plus online survey systems, project management and social media tools.

Develops, implements, and directs partnerships between College and external sponsors (such as public agengies, private business, philanthropic, and community organizations) to enhance academic programs and student success.

  • Identifies, cultivates and oversees the acquisition of potential partners; builds relationships and develops partnership concepts

  • Collaborates with faculty, administrators, and external partners to design, implement, evaluate and enhance partnerships

  • Coordinates efforts within College and University to promote and integrate partnerships into academic and service learning programs (through internships/externships, mentoring, scholarships, and related activities)

  • Creates case statements and proposals to solicit and secure funding

  • Collects data for, reviews, and reports on the success and impact of partnership programs

  • Manages an office of professional and/or administrative staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

IMPORTANT BENEFITS NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after July 1, 2019

City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after July 1, 2019 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period.

An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
