The Associate Creative Director serves as one of several editorial leaders of a monthly magazine with 5 million readers. The primary responsibilities are overseeing the editorial lineup in tandem with the Creative Director, planning and executing the feature well, and directing departments in the magazine. In addition, this editor will manage and mentor junior members of the staff, research and develop story ideas, assign narrative features, edit copy; as well as collaborate with designers and other editors on layout, infographics, video, social and feature packages.

Demonstrated excellence in packaging, display, and long-form storytelling both in print and video. Keen eye for detail. Must be highly collaborative and able to work confidently with designers. Should have a track record of mentoring and teaching staff, and come with a contact list of literary nonfiction writers. Must be a subscriber or regular reader of a variety of newsstand magazines. Software: Microsoft Word, InDesign, InCopy.

This ACD also has managerial and supervisory responsibility for senior editors and associate editors.

  • Ability to craft and edit copy that is creative, engaging and accurate.
  • Interviewing and reporting skills to tell brand stories
  • Intermediate copyediting skills to catch errors in presentations, assets, internal communications

  • Must be able to articulate the solve for the “The Strategic Why” presented by the strategy team and how the creative uniquely addresses the strategic insight and helps meet business objectives
  • Deep understanding of the emotional and tactical needs for target audiences, channels and platforms
  • Ability to give clear constructive feedback to the creative team
  • Deep understanding of the video, print, web and social process and possibilities
  • Experience working across all platforms and channels – video, print, digital (mobile-first) and social
  • Proficient in: Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint; WordPress or other CMS platforms.
  • Familiarity with and ability to follow SEO best practices and social media specifications for copy


Education:
Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or journalism. Graduate degree in writing or fine arts preferred.


Experience:
Five years’ experience as a magazine editor, preferably newsstand. Must know all aspects of editorial, including idea creation, assignments, writing, rewriting, line editing, collaborating with writers, display copy writing, packaging, script writing and infographics. Writing for social a plus.
