Professional Development Director/Education Director: CHI

Location- Chicago, IL

This position is responsible for the development and delivery of all education programs and initiatives for the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) and for the curriculum design of continuing education opportunities through FLC. This position has broad responsibility for delivering results that benefit the organization, its members and the profession in the area of continuing education using all vehicles at the organization’s disposal.

The Education Director leads the Consortium’s overall efforts to maintain a knowledgeable and vibrant industry community through the development and execution of all association meetings, conferences, seminars, and webinars. The Director is responsible for identifying key issues and top talent by engaging with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including convening member program committees; coordinating with staff on cross-functional initiatives; interacting with peer and professional groups; and managing, developing, and directing the education team.

A self-starter with a high level of initiative, innovation, service orientation, financial acumen, and interpersonal skills. The Director researches, analyzes and develops new and existing programs, and makes recommendations on how the department can maintain the highest level of educational training for the membership.

Essential Functions
In conjunction with FLC senior staff, manage the development lifecycle of core FLC educational programming: The National Conference, the Regional Conferences, in person training and online professional development.

  • Plan and execute outreach and career development programming at the FLC meetings.

    Define objectives, implement guide content, analyze economic model, and evaluate programmatic outcomes.
    Serves as a leader and mentor for direct reports, including establishing priorities and measurable goals, evaluating work output, and providing professional development opportunities.
  • Ensures operational committees, with staff support, fulfill their charges and/or stated purposes and meet identified measurable objectives within budget an on deadline; Serves as content expert to volunteer groups that are pursuing projects in the professional development portfolio.
  • Direct and support the work of the Professional Development Coordinator, including content development, speaker procurement and logistics, marketing and conference materials, and program evaluation.
  • Work collaboratively with the Meeting Director on a variety of functions, including venue selection and vendor management, meeting logistics, advertisement, contract negotiation, and registration.
  • Lead the department in uncovering revenue enhancements, cost savings opportunities, and implementing innovative programming.
  • Work with staff to ensure the sustainability of the department, including budget development, financial planning, profit and loss analysis, and goal implementation. Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and meetings and make strategic recommendations for improvement.
  • Work with the FLC Marketing and Communications department to promote the organizations education, outreach, and diversity programs, resources, and activities.
  • Engage with other organizations to establish mutually beneficial partnerships on projects.
    Performs other duties, as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education or instructional design preferred;
  • Minimum 5 years progressive experience culminating in responsibility for a wide variety of products, programs and services that focus on professional development on behalf of an association;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in education, online learning or instructional design environment;
  • Experience in a membership organizations and with volunteers a plus;
  • Must have excellent project management, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • Supervisory experience and ability to build and maintain successful teams that deliver results;
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, social media, web development and experience with CRM databases preferred.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in creating educational content for a variety of mediums including conferences and the web; experience in developing education for all levels of a profession including students, teachers, administrators and practitioners;
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and services that deliver measurable results within budget and on deadline. Understanding of costs and methods for ensuring profitability;
  • Ability to analyze research, set priorities, develop plans and budgets, take initiative, work collaboratively and deliver measurable outcomes; experience with the development of strategic plans;
  • Experience working with volunteers, subject matter experts and other key stakeholders;
