As the Head of Digital Technology, you will own the product development roadmap and lead capability engineering teams for Madewell’s ecommerce and digital, store experience and order management solutions. This includes capabilities and experiences that focus on our consumers ability to research products, purchase and engage with our brand in more meaningful ways. This also includes capabilities for our digital merchandisers and brand teams to put relevant product and content in the consumer’s path – Site Navigation, Product Pages, Landing Pages, Search and Merchandising. Additionally, solutions for use by Madewell employees and their customers, primarily focused on the Store Experience and Operations groups, Customer Order Management and other functions as appropriate. This team will be an expert in building amazing web and mobile app experiences as well as globally scalable core commerce capabilities on public clouds. In partnership with key stakeholders, this individual will be responsible for developing strategies, roadmaps and high-quality information solutions as well as driving business results through the success of key business partners and enterprise functions. This will include building and managing teams of engineers and application solutions specialists. The ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated a passion for inspiring, mentoring, and developing people and delivering services that are scalable, high quality and consistently with reusability in mind. This leader must be a technologist with strong business foundation, proven expertise in improving productivity, driving business partner satisfaction, and maintaining technology and security controls.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of the ecommerce Engineering organization, including the technical strategy, technology blueprint, and technology stacks. Manage the end to end technology execution
- Define and manage the technology landscape and blueprint for the entire solution stack. Work closely with lead engineers and architects to co-own the architecture and component strategy
- Deliver on a portfolio of projects and services enabling multiple teams and their customers in the areas Store Experience and Operations groups, Customer Order Management and other functions as appropriate.
- Actively engage in sprint planning, delivery and the management of releases
- Provide hands-on technology leadership to the engineering team
- Provide expert technical guidance to all functional areas, including strategy, operations, sales and product
- Ensure consistent best practices, processes, and procedures for software development, quality assurance, and maintenance
- Identify risks and opportunities for each project
- Mentor, motivate, and lead Engineering teams to support a vibrant and productive engineering culture
- Lead the organization’s strategic planning process, coordinate with business partners to align engineering, and business priorities
- Work closely with the Product and Design Heads to clarify, estimate, and prioritize features and integrations
- Communicate with multiple stakeholders effectively
- Cultivate a high-performing, unified team culture; an environment where seamless delivery of major roadmap items is the norm
- Mentor, teach, and lead the engineers and product managers within your org

- Uses technical knowledge to anticipate and understand the implications of the latest technologies to communicate and evangelize them to appropriate audiences and to integrate these technologies appropriately into products and programs.
- Engage and use third-party applications and develop strategic partnerships to complement Madewell technology
- Sets technology and infrastructure performance and service standards. Leads in the acquisition and/or development of new technologies and tools to improve the quality of the users’ experience without compromising service.
- Ensures that investments in technology are appropriate to the developments in the industry and produce satisfactory returns. Adjusts architecture to support changing business directions.
- Sets financial, operational and quality objectives for the unit and develops master operational plans. Plans, develops and manages departmental expense and capital budgets.
- Develops short- and long-range product and service strategies and plans. Oversees the execution of operating plans for specified area of responsibility.
- Directs through directors and managers who mentor, coach and evaluate their responsive teams and develop employees through on-boarding, open communication, training and development opportunities and performance management processes; builds and maintains employee morale and motivation; ensures the team is appropriately staffed with required competencies; fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace.
- Responsible for maintaining culture, setting up recruiting strategies, implementing process to allow scale and, ultimately, establishing Madewell as an IT employer of choice in the industry.
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years’ building and leading software engineering teams
- At least 3 years’ experience with object-oriented programming, functional programming, and data design
- At least 3 years’ experience in developing scalable web applications and architectural standards
- At least 3 years’ experience with Cloud technologies
- Experience leading technology development and integrating enterprise solutions with a focus on ecommerce and digital transformation.
- Experience leading technology development and integrating enterprise solutions with a focus on Store Experience and Operations groups, Customer Order Management and other functions as appropriate.
- Deep understanding of store technology and customer order management (OMS)
- Direct knowledge of and deep experience with Point Of Sale (POS), Credit/Debit, Store Portal, POS Hardware, Payment Devices, Customer Order Management and related technologies for digital and brick & mortar retail businesses
- Experience understanding customer’s business processes/drivers and informational needs.
- Experience identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems.
- Experience establishing & maintaining relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization, in the business community & with vendors.
- Experience managing and leading cross-functional teams.
- Experience with Enterprise technology systems.
- At least 10 years of experience directly managing people, including hiring, developing, motivating, and directing people as they work
- Experience with Retail/Apparel or Fashion technology systems integration
Education/Experience/Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with IT focused specialization.
- 10+ years working experience in hands-on technology delivery roles
