    Biomedical Research Center Director

    Our client is an R1 University and has assigned us the search for a Senior Research Scientist to lead the development of a Research Center in the Biomedical area. The executive will be responsible for the overall management of the Center, including its infrastructure, staff and project portfolio. Potential research disciplines to be included in the Center are, but need not to be restricted to: Biomedical Engineering (to include Bioinformatics, Tissue Engineering, Genetic Engineering, Neural Engineering, Medical Imaging and Bionics); and Biomed (to include Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology).

    Major Functions

    • The Director serves as the Principal Investigator for research studies and assures appropriate direction and management of complex proposals and projects
    • Establishes and oversees major research programs within the Biomedical Area, overseeing several laboratories and ensuring that the researchers in the program carry out their work according to the highest standards
    • Pursues grants and other sources of outside funding, and inspires other investigators in the Center to do the same
    • Is responsible for the Center’s annual budget and the proper use and management of funds received
    • Publishes relevant research results and review articles in leading scientific journals
    • Hires and supervises laboratory heads and research staff, and assures safe and proper performance of experiments, including the use of all necessary equipment
    • Directs staff in terms of broad priorities and specific projects
    • Provides scientific mentorship to the research staff, and looks after their professional development through training and education
    • Conducts periodic performance appraisals of direct reports
    • Is responsible for the scientific integrity of all data generated and ensures that the data is recorded in laboratory notebooks or saved electronically
    • Presents results periodically of the research programs managed at the Center to the Research Vice-President, and shares them in departmental meetings and seminars
    • May be required to serve on committees or act as a liaison to other departments and develop collaboration with external organizations
    • Secures and maintains in good standing all licenses and certifications needed for the performance of the research projects of the Center

    Qualifications

    • The Director of the Research Center is a high-level position for a self-standing scientist who is well recognized for his/her work
    • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a related discipline, and a strong record of publication
    • Candidates should also evidence appreciation for both creative activity and research, and an interest in collaboration across methodological approaches
    • Preference will be given to candidates who have significant and successful experience in securing and managing grants, as well as some proven facility for administration
    • The Director must be able to think strategically, conduct data analyses, work on several activities simultaneously, and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
    • Knowledge and application of statistical analysis is required for hypothesis testing and publishing research
    • Familiarity with research funding institutions and major peer-reviewed journals
    • Demonstrated success in conceptualizing and developing funded research
    • Facility in research project management, implementation and evaluation
    • Knowledge of research budget development and management
    • Experience in high-level oversight over multiple complex projects
    • Knowledge and ability to implement principles of management, leadership, conflict resolution, negotiation and motivation
    • Ability to foster a collaborative, customer-oriented working environment
    • In-depth understanding of organizational processes and systems
    • Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills
    • Minimum of 10 years or high-level management expertise in research or related field
    • Minimum of 8 years of experience in supervising and mentoring staff
    • Working knowledge of standard desktop computing software packages (word processing, spread sheet, presentation software, and internet browsers)
