For 39 years, Maharishi School has been pioneering an inside out orientation to its college prep mission. Where you might least expect it—in the small town tranquility of rural Iowa—abides one of America’s most unique and innovative schools. Twice daily our students and teachers invest time in yoga and Transcendental Meditation, the rewards of which show throughout the school day and beyond. We call this Consciousness-Based Education (CBE) because we are optimizing our alertness and focus while fostering holistic student development.

Maharishi School is an independent day and boarding school for preschool through grade 12. We have a proven record of academic excellence and extracurricular achievement as a model school for this dual approach—inner development and outer success—including the systematic study of consciousness, interdisciplinary connections, and social-emotional learning and life skills.
Maharishi School Mission: To create an innovative Consciousness-Based educational environment where students think deeply and become creative, compassionate, contributing citizens of the world.
Maharishi School is seeking an inspiring, experienced, collaborative educational leader for the Head of School who will cherish and nurture its mission and legacy. The Head’s primary responsibilities are to oversee all aspects of the School’s functioning, faculty, and staff, and ensure the financial health of the institution. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors.
Maharishi School is located in Fairfield, Iowa, one of America’s most dynamic and interesting small towns, named twice as one of Iowa’s “Great Places” by the State, and as one of America’s best small towns by Smithsonian Magazine. Because the economic base of our community is not comparable to a major city’s, however, our tuition revenue and employee compensation levels reflect this small town America standard. This is largely offset by the intangibles of our school and community and the lower cost of living.
Head responsibilities include:
- Leading the school’s academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs
- Overseeing the financial management, maintenance of the physical plant, strategic planning, and fundraising
- Facilitating effective collective decision-making by the students, faculty, staff and the School as a whole
- Representing the School to parents, alumni, donors, the local community, and the broader educational community and continually seeking to strengthen channels of communication for all constituents
- Upholding the school culture and quality of life, providing a safe and effective environment for learning
- Representing the school administration to the Board of Directors
- Managing accreditation by governmental and private bodies and compliance with all legal and fiscal requirements
The ideal candidate would have:
- Leadership skills
- Excellent teaching experience at the primary or secondary level
- Previous school leadership experience or equivalent senior administrative role
- A graduate degree in school administration
- Background in Consciousness Based Education
- Financial proficiency
- Successful management experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- High emotional intelligence
Interested applicants can submit a cover letter and resume to Eliana Freeman, Chair of the Maharishi School Board of Directors. Pre-employment background checks required.
