Job Summary:
An integral member of Selfhelp’s Development team, the Director, Individual Giving/Major Gifts will oversee all individual giving programs that enable Selfhelp’s vital work, helping older adults live independently with dignity. Reporting to the department’s Executive Director, the Director, Individual Giving will build and manage a portfolio of new and current donors and prospects, working to secure annual, major and planned gifts. S/he will work with various lay leadership entities including the Board of Directors, Foundation Board and the Chinese and Russian Advisory Councils to strengthen and grow Selfhelp’s annual and targeted fundraising campaigns.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develops, implements and evaluates a strategic fundraising plan for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and annual gifts prospects and donors to achieve revenue projections.
- Researches, identifies and cultivates new potential individual donors and family foundations at all levels.
- Manages a portfolio of individual donors and prospects through all stages of engagement, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
- Maintain prospect list, visit and solicitation schedule.
- Identify new major gift prospects and develop strategies for outreach, site visits, cultivation and solicitation as well as effective stewardship of current donors.
- Develops solicitation strategies and prepares briefing materials for solicitation visits to leadership and major donors.
- Works closely with Board and Foundation Board members in optimizing fundraising results.
- Write correspondence, proposals and reports as needed.
- Manages a portfolio of estate bequests and trusts as well as gifts of tangible personal property such as stocks and bonds.
- Perform other job duties as required or assigned.

- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum seven years fundraising experience, preferably in a human service or health care institution
- Must have proven track record of successful solicitation with high-level prospects and donors
- Superior oral, written, presentation and interpersonal skills
- High level of personal motivation, initiative and creativity
- Ability to work with diverse organizational leadership
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently, yet collaboratively, as an effective member of team
- Positive and enthusiastic, with a “can-do” attitude, sense of humor
- Willingness to travel within the New York metropolitan area and be available for some evening meetings and events
- Proficiency with the Raiser’s Edge software a plus
