Deputy Director of Public Utility Regulation Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $109,097 to $143,000 Starting Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience The Virginia State Corporation Commission (Commission) seeks a highly professional and talented leader to serve as a Deputy Director in its Division of Public Utility Regulation (Division). This is a leadership and managerial position reporting to the Director of the Division. The Deputy Director provides leadership over, and is responsible for, establishing goals, objectives, and management policies for various areas within the Division. The Deputy Director is responsible for: managing staff activities relative to transmission line filings from the perspectives of need, cost, and siting; overseeing staff to ensure the effective resolution of consumer complaints relative to public utilities; managing staff to ensure that utilities provide adequate customer service and distribution service reliability; managing staff relative to the regulation of communications companies; and managing the legislative tracking process for the Division. Additional responsibilities include: providing the Commission with policy advice relative to electric utilities; coordinating the review, tracking, and analysis of legislative proposals; recommending solutions to address regulatory issues; and testifying as necessary before Committees at the General Assembly. Public presentations and some travel are required.

Preferred qualifications for this position include comprehensive professional senior level experience in the regulation or management of public utility companies; experience leading and managing professional staff; and educational background or experience in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering or a related field. Extensive knowledge of Virginia laws, rules, and regulations governing the operations of public utility companies is advantageous. The ideal candidate will have the ability to: think strategically; lead, coach, and develop professional staff; delegate responsibility and review results to ensure deliverables are met; make quality and timely decisions; and prepare written material in a clear, concise and meaningful manner. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the General Assembly, Commission staff, industry personnel, and the general public is central to this position. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
