This role will be accountable for the leadership needed to define, evolve and implement Cox’s integrated environmental sustainability strategy, with associated enterprise wide goals. These goals include: Zero Waste to landfill by 2024 and Carbon and Water Neutral by 2044 and are designed to drive environmental and business results, reduce risk and ensure continuity and enhance brand value.

Reporting to the SVP, Finance, this role will lead Cox’s efforts to implement projects in the areas of waste and recycling, alternate energy, water use reduction, energy procurement and conservation, and engineering. This leader will be responsible for increasing employee satisfaction and engagement through the “Cox Conserves and You” engagement platform.

The position will manage a team of Directors and Senior Directors as well as an indirect staff of approximately 20 based in Atlanta, Georgia.


Overall Strategy:
This leader will be responsible for defining, evolving, and implementing Cox’s environmental sustainability strategy, with associated enterprise wide goals. Ability to think strategically, identify emerging issues, analyze potential impacts critically and translate research, ideals and insights into viable recommendations for action. Serve as the internal leader and subject matter expert for sustainability, monitoring emerging trends, programs and issues, and communicating and educating others on relevant topics. Provide guidance on the company responses to questions or statements of position on climate related matters including potential policy positions.

Executive Presence and Communicator
: The candidate will possess outstanding interpersonal & communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to work closely and communicate effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders. Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to develop internal and external communication strategies to publicize the company’s sustainability effort and promote broad awareness of initiatives including the Sustainability Report, CDP questionnaires and industry surveys. Collaborate with Corporate Communications to ensure Cox is represented in sustainability networks and related industry events. Lead effort to collect and report on Cox’s environmental data.

Drive Results/Execution
: The position requires a leader who is entrepreneurial, self-motivated, independent and results oriented with the ability to motivate and engage direct and indirect team members and stakeholders. Possess strong management & project leadership experience. An analytical mind with strong financial skills for modeling sustainability projects. Working knowledge of GRI, CDP, SASB and TCFD. Consistent demonstration of sound judgment and professionalism in a fast-paced dynamic environment. Familiarity with existing and emerging energy efficiency and sustainability technologies. Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while paying attention to detail.
Ensure appropriate internal controls and measurement systems are in place to support sustainability efforts. Measure and monitor progress against key strategies, objectives and performance targets.

Qualifications:

  • Leadership role in managing complex projects
  • Strong network within sustainability, environmental and other related communities required
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams
  • Frequent exposure to executive leadership teams
  • Proven track record of senior stakeholder management and influencing
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience culminating in a senior leadership role developing and managing sustainable programs and/or technical/engineering initiatives for large corporations resulting in positive financial and environmental outcomes
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sustainability or a complementary field to sustainability is required. An advanced degree would further enhance the ideal candidate’s qualifications.
