Honigman is a premier AmLaw 200 firm seeking an experienced Proposal Manager to join our Business Development team in our Detroit office. The Proposal Manager exercises discretion and independent judgment while working under the general direction of the Director of Business Development and according to established Firm policies and procedures. The Proposal Manager oversees and provides strategic direction for the firm’s proposal function, with responsibility for responding to requests for proposals (RFPs), developing pitch documents and managing multi-practice pitch opportunities both independently and in collaboration with business development managers (BDMs). The Proposal Manager is expected to understand the firm’s practices and their distinguishing characteristics such that he or she can draft original content and maintain existing content through regular updating and reporting. This position also works with BDMs and other business professionals in the firm to collect, edit and organize content in support of business development opportunities. Essential duties are performed personally or in conjunction with other members of the Business Development Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drafting, editing and proofreading RFPs, client proposals, capability statements, pitch books, and other related materials.
- Work with BDMs and Firm lawyers to develop proposals, capability statements and pitch materials.
- Lead the Firm’s automated software system Pitchly by updating strategic content and leveraging reporting capabilities to deliver key metrics to leadership
- Understand a variety of practice areas and expertise in order to effectively respond to pitch requirements. Additionally, be conversant in key practice differentiators, and other firm offerings such as legal project management and client service standards.
- Manage the pitch flow and work streams for the Business Development team. Manage RFP timelines and adhere to proposal deadlines.
- Ensure a high quality work product – meaning proposals are responsive to attorneys/ prospective client needs and are error free.
- Continue to develop and manage the content library, representative matters list, and library of proposals and standardized RFP responses.
- Responsible for tracking and reporting pitch statistics related to conversion rates (win/loss), industry sectors, fee strategies and client targets.
- Periodically develop reports for firm leadership on proposal activity and success rates.
- Develop a system to evaluate opportunities in order to determine which should be pursued and how resources should be allocated to their pursuits.
- Maintain the proposal database and filing system.
- Assist as needed with editing of other written materials such as: presentations, PowerPoint pitch materials, and website content.
- Regularly liaise with Director of Business Development and Value Team to determine pricing structure for fees.
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English or Business and five or more years’ related experience are required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior experience working in a law firm or accounting firm is required. Large law firm experience strongly preferred.
- Must be an excellent writer with the ability to effectively articulate value proposition, practice/attorney expertise and differentiation. Attention to detail and precision in both thinking and written work product are important.
- Must be a highly motivated self-starter, exhibit a high degree of initiative and intellectual curiosity.
- Must possess strong business judgment in order to establish and manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment.
- Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential. Ability to communicate with courtesy and diplomacy, in order to maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys and business professionals. Team collaboration is critical.
- Superior analytical and critical thinking skills that support strong problem-solving capabilities are necessary.
- Excellent project and time management skills in order to develop project plans, coordinate projects, communicate changes and progress, complete projects on time and manage project team activities.
- Excellent organizational skills including record keeping, data collection and system information. Ability to compile and analyze complex data and furnish concise, detailed information in report format, written correspondence, e-mail or verbally.
- Advanced skills in MS Suite products including Word, Excel and Powerpoint are required. Experience with Adobe software including Adobe InDesign, Acrobat and Nuance is strongly preferred. Interaction experience a plus.
- Ability to understand and support the Firm’s goals, services, culture and strategy in order to represent the Firm in a positive, professional manner.
- Occasional travel is required.
- Work may require overtime for pitch deadlines. On demand flexibility is required.
