Job Summary
On October 3, 2019, University President Mark S. Schlissel announced the creation of a comprehensive arts initiative to unleash imagination and creativity across the university. ( U-M President launches new arts initiative ). The leadership of the arts initiative is seeking a highly competent and skilled Managing Director to provide operational and strategic leadership support for the initiative. The Managing Director will support the execution of the strategic goals and activities of the start-up phase of the initiative, which includes pilot projects, stakeholder engagement, and the creation of a robust long term programmatic plan (including budget and resources). The Managing Director reports to the co-chairs of the working group that is charged with the overall leadership for the initiative. The working group is comprised of deans, institutional arts leaders, senior staff, and faculty members. The initial term of the position will be three years with the possibility of renewal.
Responsibilities*
The Managing Director position will help the working group accomplish its responsibilities by working independently and in partnership with others both in central administrative and research/academic units on the following:
Coordinate with academic and programmatic arts leaders on campus, in the community, and in the local, regional, and national contexts to develop the programmatic and institutional foci of the Arts Initiative.
Provide oversight and management for a wide range of projects, programs, events, facilities, and convenings.
Supervise the Project Administrator and other part-time, temporary, or assigned staff or consultants in executing the programs, projects, and activities of the initiative.
Coordinate governance and oversee budgetary, regulatory, HR, communications, and administrative matters.
Facilitate the ongoing development of a range of formal and informal organization and community engagement processes to build a strong support base for arts, arts collaboration, and arts engagement.
Serve as a liaison for fundraising, grantsmanship, and stewardship in collaboration with the Office of Development, the Office of Research, and other U-M units as appropriate.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and as necessary to achieve the objectives of the initiative.
Required Qualifications*
The successful candidate will have a background in the arts in some combination of production/project management, academic programming, arts programming, event planning, interdisciplinary research, practice, and/or teaching.
Prior management and supervisory experience in arts or cultural organizations and/or universities is required. Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational facilitation skills are critical to the effectiveness of this role.
Demonstrated self-starter with ability to set priorities, be proactive, respond quickly, and think creatively while operating in a flexible and professional manner.
Proven ability to perform highly responsible, sensitive, and confidential duties using independent judgment and professionalism.
Excellent written and oral communication skills including ability to present strong and persuasive reasoning for decision making and actions to be taken.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and anticipate needs.
Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to build successful relationships with a wide variety of people at all levels (UM leadership, collaborative units, faculty, staff, students, etc.)
Desired Qualifications*
Advanced degree in and knowledge of University organizational structure, policies, and procedures. Interest in the Arts.
