The American Diabetes Association is seeking an energetic
and creative communications professional to join its Marketing &
Communications team in the role of Manager, Communications & Media
Relations. This position acts as the “.front line”. for media requests
coming into the Association and plays a critical role supporting proactive
media relations and reputation management. This position also contributes to
growing and enhancing the Association’s primary awareness building campaigns
and will support our growing social media influence across a number of

Media Relations:
- Executes the ADA’s day-to-day media relations
coordination. - Supports the ADA’s media relations efforts by
fielding inquiries, developing media materials and messaging, pitching and
developing relationships with members of the media, managing satellite and
radio media tours, and other duties. - Scans media and monitoring services to curate and
produce timely media coverage reports.
Spokesperson Cultivation & Media Training:
- Identifies and prepares appropriate internal and
external spokespeople for various ADA initiatives, provides detailed background
information including talking points, conducts prep sessions and supports media
training efforts.
Writing:
- Produces a wide range of high-quality written
communication materials including but not limited to messaging, talking points,
Q&As, briefing materials, press advisories and releases, statements,
op-eds, media pitches, web copy, newsletter copy, social media messaging and
blog posts.
Campaign & Event Support:
- Provides media relations support for a variety of
special projects and events. - Manages ADA’s Scientific Sessions press program
and additional conference and event press events.
Account Management:
- Participates in regular meetings with internal clients
to proactively identify key campaign opportunities well in advance. - Maintains calendar of campaigns.
- Works with internal clients to determine needs
and scope of projects. - Involves key MarCom team members at critical
points in the process, manages timelines and budgets, delivers products to
client.
Strategy and Planning:
- Works with colleagues in the Marketing Division
to create strategic approaches for earned media efforts. - Writes strategic communications, media and public
relations plans. - Works with division team members, internal
clients, cross-functional teams, and external consultants/vendors, as
appropriate, to identify scopes of work, strategies, tactics, deliverables and
timelines for campaigns or promotions.
Metrics:
- Establishes key metrics for media and public
relations campaigns. - Gathers data and reports on campaign performance
against established metrics. Uses insights from metrics to inform the
development and execution of future campaigns.
Collaboration & Integration:
- Works closely with colleagues throughout the Marketing
Division, the Strategic Communications & Public Relations Department and
across the ADA to advance the ADA’s mission, development and campaign
priorities.
Vendor Management:
- Manages communications with vendors and identifies
beneficial collaborations and partnerships.
- Between 3-5 years media/journalism experience

Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and
verbal; bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus - Superior writing and interviewing skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, mission driven environment

Self-starter; deadline oriented; personable—able to foster
positive working relationships with colleagues, small business owners,
partners, etc. - Ability to understand medical and science media and media outlets
- Interest in advocacy, public policy and medical communications
- Available to work outside regular working hours and weekends as
needs arise -
Enjoy a collaborative work environment with ability to work as
part of a team with multiple internal and external resources; as well, must be
able to work independently and remotely with team members in other
cities/states -
