Job Summary:

The Senior Director is responsible for all aspects of the division’s information technology strategy and associated systems. This includes the direct management of dedicated delivery resources as well as oversight of all aspects of technology support and operations pertaining to the division business functions. This role drives overall technology strategy and directs the planning and implementation of technology related business solutions in support of business application in order to improve cost effectiveness, service quality, and business development.

Job Summary:

Markel is seeking an IT Digital Leader with proven thought leadership in developing and implementing digital strategy to help implement Markel’s IT digital strategy. The IT Digital Leader will have responsibility in leading the Portal and API IT teams and work directly with the Chief Digital Officer and the digital product team. The Digital IT leader is expected to be a vocal advocate for our API and micro-services based architecture that can influence IT and Business leaders, establish governance and best practices and be an evangelist of our digital transformation. The ideal candidate will have experience with lean/agile methods, DevOps, cloud and strong creative problem-solving capabilities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Understands business objectives and strategic goals to provide guidance and recommendations on potential digital solutions
  • Serve as a thought leader, diagnoses and collaborate on business problems
  • Work with the Digital Engagement Leaders to prioritize digital organization’s backlog
  • Lead a cross-functional team to develop, manage and monitor the adoption of API governance framework, standards and API gateway
  • Be an advocate and evangelist across teams for the use of integration services, micro-services architecture and API vision, while creating & monitoring standards, supporting technical questions and coaching teams
  • Be a vocal thought leader to assist in Markel’s digital transformation journey & alignment of API strategy
  • Provide architectural guidance and expertise for the integration of external service providers
  • Offer technical direction on how to adopt and use the latest tools and technologies
  • Coach and educate developers in API best practices
  • Seek opportunities for automation and leverage Agile and DevOps to optimize delivery practices
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency of business processes and/or support business growth, working with relevant stakeholders to establish the benefits of using API services to build products
  • Identify modifications needed in existing services to meet changing user requirements
  • Manage team work load ensuring delivery to timelines with high quality
  • Maintain a high standard of code and design documentation, ensuring all relevant systems and data comply with regulatory (SOX) and IT standards and procedures
  • Ensure all development conforms with Markel Global Security requirements
  • Provide visibility & support to the IT and Business Leadership Team
  • Take ownership of critical tasks and are outcome focused
  • Build strong relationships and are a trusted advisor to IT and the business
  • Continuous learner, seeking out new technological solutions, languages and coding methods

Requirements for the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or military experience
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible relevant IT leadership experience
  • 10+ years team leadership & management both directly and within a matrix framework
  • 5+ years coding in either Java, JavaScript, Python, C# (.net)
  • 5+ years using frameworks such as Node.js, SOAP/XML, REST/JSON API’s, Grails, Flask
  • 5+ years of experience with relational databases and SQL – MS SQL Server preferred
  • 5+ years of creating new digital products and services that transform the customer experience
  • 3+ years Agile project delivery methods
  • Functional/regression testing of code
  • Using tools such as GitHub, Stack Exchange, experience with DevOps, CI/CD and test automation
  • Familiarity with API security/authentication
  • Rapid prototype sprints to deliver new innovations to market
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Developing and implementing standards, procedures and guidelines
  • Exposure to API integration frameworks such as Apigee, MuleSoft or alternative API platform
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry a plus but not required
  • Some travel (10-20%) will be required
