Job-Specific Responsibilities

The Accessibility Services Office (ASO) is responsible for providing accommodations for students with documented disabilities enrolled in the programs and Schools of Continuing Education at Harvard University. The provision and determination of eligibility for accommodations, Accessibility Services Office fulfills the university’s legal responsibilities under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amended Act (ADAAA). A sampling of accommodations might include alternative-format textbooks, note-takers, exam accommodations, academic counseling, and various forms of assistive technology. The ASO serves as a single entry point for students within the Division of Continuing Education who require accommodations in their academic courses and, when appropriate, co-curricular student life, including housing and residential life accommodations. ASO collaborates with other Harvard offices and schools to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to facilities and activities on campus.

Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager of the Accessibility Services Office, the Assistant Director will be an integral part of the Accessibility Services Office team. The Assistant Director has direct responsibility to determine disability status, eligibility for accommodations, and decision-making regarding reasonable and appropriate accommodations for individual students.

The position will support the ASO through direct decision making and direct service to (approximately 600 traditional and non-traditional) students annually, through in-person and technologically assisted meetings.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop appropriate curricular and co-curricular accommodation/modification plans based on functional limitations created by individual conditions, a subset of approximately 600 students per academic year.
  • Participate in the interactive process for new students.
  • Reviews student documentation, synthesize information to develop reasonable accommodation plans; ensures documentation meets standards established by DCE; makes decisions related to accommodation requests; monitors services and re-evaluate as needs and courses change.
  • Hires, supervises and trains exam proctors in collaboration with the Accessibility Coordinator(s)
  • Collaborate with faculty and departments in the effective, required, and timely delivery of academic materials; confirm accommodation implementation and effectiveness throughout each course
  • Support the ASO team and Director through on-going student support, development of policy and procedures, and overall office functionality.
  • Other duties as assigned

Typical Core Duties

  • Develop and implement programs to enhance the quality of the student experience; manage processes, outreach, content and finances
  • Act as a primary advising resource for students and faculty program requirements, academic degree progress, leaves of absence, cross-registration, adviser selection, and quality of life
  • Manage events and conferences including developing content, structure, and publicity, coordinating with other Harvard offices and groups, and managing logistical details
  • Advise student organizations on a variety of matters including risk reduction strategies, safe alcohol management, budgeting and goal setting
  • Produce and analyze reports to analyze program and event data
  • May determine accessibility eligibility and promote available resources and available options
  • May work with the Title IX office on best practices and coordination of the University’s overall response to Title IX issues
  • Develop and implement comprehensive event management training programs for student organization leaders
  • Interpret and clarify local and University policies and procedures for student leaders
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications

Master’s Degree strongly preferred. Experience with disability service provision in higher education 5-7 years strongly preferred. Knowledge of and experience working with the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), FERPA, WCAG 2.0AA, and Assistive Technology. Experience interpreting clinical documentation for a full range of disabilities and operationalizing into reasonable accommodations in the college environment for traditional and non-traditional learners. Strong organizational skills with expertise in planning, problems-solving, and, the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment. Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing with careful attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.

The Harvard Extension School, the Harvard Summer School, the Harvard Professional Development Programs and the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement allow Harvard to serve the learning needs of students across their life.
