The Commercial Business Director, West (CBD) directly supervises a group of District Managers and has responsibility for sales of the overall geography (United States). The focus is on business development and execution and is responsible for identifying opportunities to maximize the commercial potential for GU therapies. This newly created role reports directly to the Franchise Head.

As the Commercial Business Director (Field Based Role) you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives. The North American Commercial field organization is the ‘face’ of AstraZeneca to our many healthcare stakeholders. AstraZeneca’s GU field team is part of the broader AstraZeneca commercial field team who represent many of the most well recognized and respected oncology products in the industry and build strong relationships with healthcare professionals.

AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is organized into four key franchises, Immuno-oncology, Lung, Women’s Healthcare and Hematology focused principally on four disease areas – lung, breast, ovarian and the hematological malignancies. We are looking for a Commercial Business Director who shares the same passion that can deliver innovation, and advocate for our products in the GU disease settings. The Commercial Business Director, GU is responsible for ensuring sales forecasts and operational budgets are met or exceeded within the GU oncology business.


The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

Excellent Business and Analytic Acumen

  • Has a relentless drive, understands the complexities of regional health care markets and can lead regional sales leaders to drive successful business plans.
  • Leads team to ensure strong collaboration with customers to help shape perceptions of AZ and enhance the brand portfolio.
  • Ensures delivery on select, high-impact, customer-specific approaches to commercialization
  • Accurately acknowledges both the broad environmental context of situations and the needs/motivations of others (i.e., excellent insight into how to get things done and know who they need to influence and why).
  • Has the ability to identify issues and opportunities before others and uses robust analytical rigor to frame situations and incorporate new perspectives and ideas. Anticipates and/or removes obstacles for others so that teams/workgroups can deliver results and succeed.

Strong management, leadership and coaching capabilities

  • Inspires ownership, accountability, initiative, and engagement within the entire team by regularly communicating AZ’s vision, business objectives, performance outcomes, and future action steps.
  • Develops people and the organization by investing in long-term development of others through mentoring, coaching, and continuous feedback.
  • Creates a climate of trust so team members can act decisively by clarifying roles/responsibilities and establishing boundaries of decision-making.
  • Ability to lead and influence district sales leaders through modeling and coaching to AZ’s leadership capabilities.
  • Establishes business objectives, assesses performance, and addresses skill development for direct reports to ensure appropriate portfolio management, including opportunities for career development.


Background and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, MBA preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience in the pharmaceutical Industry, including demonstrated commercial leadership
  • Experience in oncology required, hematologic-oncology preferred
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and experience in multiple commercial functional business areas is preferred (e.g. Market Access, Brand Team/Marketing and Sales Operations)
  • Demonstrated understanding of customer segments and regional market dynamics within oncology
  • Strong competencies in strategic thinking, project management, communication/presentation and negotiation/influencing skills
  • Working relationships with top Key External Experts (KEEs)
