Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the Innovator in Residence (IIR) has accountability for leveraging Atrium’s assets and people to accelerate impactful innovation. The Innovator in Residence is responsible for collaborating across all boundaries to create the overarching strategy, governance, tools and processes, and org that will reach the next level of breakthrough and impactful innovation.
The candidate must work collaboratively with other senior executives and all leaders and levels of the organization to develop and implement a broad innovation framework that is strategically aligned with Atrium’s vision and strategy. s/he is responsible for recognizing, fostering and prioritizing innovation as a system and culture within Atrium by partnering closely inside the organization and through external partnerships.
The IIR will help to build and nurture a forward-thinking culture of ideation, incubation, implementation and entrepreneurship, and accelerate the pace of value-add and impactful innovation within Atrium. This role will lead to a significant innovation leadership role within Atrium Health.
Position Accountabilities:
- Collaborates to Develop and lead the formation of an enterprise wide innovation strategy, governance, and method that will harness the insights and passion of Atrium’s 60k+ employees.
- Helps lead an enhanced operational/execution mindset and business acumen for innovation within Atrium
- Develops and leads key strategic initiatives that advance the mission and growth goals of the organization, using innovation as a platform and economic engine
- Builds a platform and method for evidence based innovation for the enterprise.
- Where impactful leads collaborations with other academic institutions, industries, partners, collaborators and venture capitalists
- Champions the generation and collection of innovative ideas by collaborating at all levels of the organization
- Deploys methodologies to manage the end-to-end innovation lifecycle from define, design, launch, pilot, scale to fully operationalize and when relevant, commercialize
- Advocates for and maintains a pipeline of breakthrough ideas, technologies, products, services and business models that produces or enhances value
- Fully leverages what is already in place at Atrium with its Innovation Engine and past successes.
- Partners in translating and advancing Atrium’s vision by implementing a people-first and evidence based innovation system.
- Challenges the normal pace and impact of by influencing quantum change, continuous learning and creative thinking as well as facilitates ideas achieving success, scaling up and sustaining maximum effectiveness through potential organizational inertia
- Effectively educates and communicates to stakeholders the theory, tools, methods, and language of innovation in order to engage and build the momentum for leaders and the organization to embrace a way of thinking, behaving and performing.
- Partners with HR leadership to define and deploy the behaviors and competencies of innovation leadership.
- Leads cross-functional projects and teams to ensure successful project implementation.
- Leads the development of a budget for innovation and metrics for innovation
- Will implement a standard set of tools and methods that will drive to innovation outcomes in all areas. This will empower all teams to be innovators on their own with a tight collaboration with the Innovation Engine.
- Leads the effort to build capability throughout the company through classes, projects, online learning so that innovation methods and tools and skills will be scalable across the enterprise, which will create a standard language to accelerate broad impact.
Qualifications:
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree and MBA, MPH, MD, PhD or related master’s-level degree is strongly preferred.
Work Experience, Skills & Abilities:
- A minimum of ten years of progressive senior management experience and a growing national reputation for innovation.
- An extensive network of relationships that will promote up-to-date knowledge of all pertinent developments in the industry and new partnership opportunities.
- An astute understanding of the theory, methods, tools and language needed to deliver impactful innovation and to create an enterprise-wide innovation culture.
- Demonstrated skills and knowledge in working with external innovators to harness solutions for the improvement of care deliver, consumer experience, etc….
- A track record of succeeding in a complex, multi-site, highly regulated matrixed organization.
- Direct and proven experience leading innovation in a healthcare setting.

- A profound understanding of the trends, challenges, and opportunities facing the healthcare industry, and an appreciation of Atrium’s unique position and opportunity within the industry.
- Sharp financial acumen, an understanding of the financial underpinnings of business models, ability to conduct ROI and breakeven analysis; fluid knowledge of trends in venture capital and seed stage funding.
