Executive Director
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief operating officer for the Hudgens Center for the Arts, working closely with and reporting to, the Board of Directors. The ED has overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Hudgens Center for the Arts staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission and will develop deep knowledge of field, core programs, operations, and business plans. The ED shall be the face of the Hudgens to ensure positive community perception and awareness. The ED will network to secure key sponsorships and funding for the Center. The ED shall conduct all business at the highest standard of integrity ensuring that all activities are legal and ethical.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Management:
- The ED shall be the face of the Hudgens to ensure positive community perception and awareness.
- Create high level executive relationships that result in significant funding contributions.
- Exhibit strong leadership, communication, delegation and interpersonal skills.
- Continually grow and expand the Hudgens “brand” so that the Hudgens is well known and a sought-after asset within the community.
- Expand, develop, maintain and support a strong Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio of each committee, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction.
- Ensure ongoing local program excellence with rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals as outlined by the Board of Directors.
- Pro-actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.
- Consistently and proactively communicate with various community leaders on perception of the Hudgens Center to ensure innovative programs, classes and exhibits are consistent with the desired needs of the community.
- Educate and inform the Board, donors and community members regarding events and trends in the arts.
- Regular communications with the Executive Committee reporting on key issues and accomplishments.
- Lead, coach, develop, and retain a cohesive and high-performing staff. Hire, direct, and evaluate staff. Ensure effective tracking and regularly evaluate program components, in order to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other stakeholders.
- Oversee all components of physical operations, appropriately delegating duties and tasks to the operations director.
- Establish policies and standard operating procedures including a policy manual and to include ensuring safety of the staff & visitors.
Fundraising & Communications:
- Develop and manage fundraising strategies to expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion while simultaneously building reserve.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Development to assist in the development and implementation of all fundraising strategies.
- Proactively and consistently seek out and establish new relationships that result in significant donor revenue contributions.
- Prepare and present the annual operating budget for approval by the board; responsible for the overall management of financial performance against objectives, the annual budget, and the strategic plan including revenue and expense management to achieve performance objectives.
- Prepare a capital improvements strategy and budget; work with Director of Development to create and implement capital funding plan.
- Expand, deepen and refine all aspects of communications to include social media and external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
- Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities and support.
- Supervise marketing strategies to achieve fundraising goals and positive achievement of the organization.
Programs, Planning & New Business:
- Develop, implement and work in conjunction with the Board on the strategic plan, annual budget, and associated action items.
- Develop, implement and supervise programs and services that are consistent with the organization’s mission, strategic plan and annual budget.
- Oversee creation and expansion of programs and exhibits that generate broad community interest and appeal to a broad base of supporters and donors while honoring and respecting the history of the Hudgens Art Center.
- Create programs that have broad appeal that foster strong connections to the donor community.
- Expand programs and exhibits to be varied and reflective of the community need and demands.
- Build partnerships and establish relationships with the funders, political and community leaders. Develop effective working relationship within the community to strengthen the Hudgens programming, raise visibility and awareness and increase funding opportunities.
- Maintain an external local and regional presence communicating program results and collaboration with regional arts organizations.
Qualifications
The ED will be thoroughly committed to the mission and should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. The ED will be a college graduate with at least 5 years management experience, with a love of the arts, significant experience in the arts or a related area is a plus, nonprofit experience desired but not required; prior experience as ED is preferred.
Concrete and demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
- Self-motivated and self-directed.
- A track record of effectively leading a regional performance and outcomes-based organization and staff including specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
- Knowledge of the region’s arts community
- Proven record as a success fundraiser.
- Strong planning, management, delegation, organizational and analytical skills
- Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, lead and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and actively manage a budget within the established approved budget.
- Past success working with a Board with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships and establish new ones.
- Ability to positively motivate and develop staff, board, and volunteers and build consensus
- Visionary and innovative thinker with action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptive and innovative approaches to business practices.
- Demonstratable positive attitude, proactive leadership and a positive approach to problem solving.
- Ability to maximize resources and work with a small and efficient team
- Ability to work collaboratively with all sectors of the community, Boards and staff
- Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate and enthusiastic communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, flexible and adaptable, and an innovative approach to business planning.
- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
- Energetic and Positive attitude, thoughtful, passionate, idealism, high level of integrity, mission-driven.
