MISSION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

We are current looking for a Director of R&D /VME (Value, Maintenance and Expansion. This position will be placed in Morris Plains- New Jersey.

Business Purpose

To protect and extract value of innovation and current business plus facilitate and accelerate the identification and qualification of cost innovation projects across the category. Coty’s R&D organization is moving to a new organizational and operating model having 2 main platforms; 1) Value Creation and 2) Value Preservation. VME will be an integral part of the Value Preservation platform where it will create a global partnership with supply chain and initiative management organizations to execute the VME master plan. This is a newly created organization within R&D that will rebalance the cost innovation portfolio, because of this, the Director will be charged with staffing her/his group with internal and/or external associates. The VME organization will 5 internal pillars -ways of work- as follows: 1) Technical Rigor and Readiness, 2) Value engineering, 3) Raw and Packing material savings, 4) Troubleshooting and 5) Regulatory Compliance and Business Continuity. The job of VME will be vital to the company “Turnaround Plan”. Successful candidate would also have representation in the following communities of practice: raw materials, packing materials and process. This Director will report to the VP of R&D/VME for Color Cosmetics & Nails. Director will have constant interaction with the Category Leaders.

Key Challenges:
Leading the continuous VME project pipeline of the corresponding Category (Face, Eyes, Lips or Nails)

Balancing the requirements of the VME portfolio, category marketing requirements, R&D Innovation Master Plan, Current Business support and Regulatory considerations.

Continuing to find new ways to integrate (new) technology best practices into the cost innovation agenda of the Category.

Building an environment and culture which supports the Company’s core values which enables people development.

Continually building understanding of beauty technology and consumer insights and integrate those into winning propositions.

Development and maintenance of “leading edge” world class expertise within the technologies relevant to the Category.

Job Responsibilities

Experienced Director or equivalent position with proven record for defining robust qualification plans for new or reformulated products, new processes or redesigned packages through deep understanding of product and consumer qualification end-to-end. Experience at coordinating this effort on a global basis would be a highly desired skill.

Proven track record of leading projects across multiple geographies with clear leadership evidence across R&D functions, as well as, with commercial and technical partners. Ability to influence upper management is critical.

Successful record of developing and leading organizations across multiple technical centers. Record of developing necessary work systems and interdependent collaboration among teams is critical.

Capacity….this category is complex with multiple geographies, product platforms and regulations by country. This assignment will require a candidate with high capacity, ability to independently prioritize own and direct report projects. Moderate (to at times high) travel will be required.

Proven skills in Formulation and Process Design plus the development of improvements to related work systems. A record of leadership and collaboration skills across Seamless Technical Teams or Communities is desired.

Take processes from laboratory to pilot scale to production, including transfer of technology and documentation.

Work with other R&D Scientific Services, Packaging groups, Initiatives management and Supply groups on rollout projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor or Master Degree of Science in Scientific field is required. Experience working in CPG’s industry is highly desirable. Experience in Beauty Care is preferable or experience working in Pharma, Food & Beverage or other related Chemical / Life Science Industries.

Experience running an R&D organization. 3 or more direct reports minimum and ability of supervising and developing groups of 10 or more people.

Proven technical and scientific experience in one or more R&D areas, formulation, product design, process development, consumer research, packaging, etc.

Experience with recruitment, management and development of people; ability to engage in career development globally.

Proven track record as a top performer in developing projects, implementing projects, cost savings and problem solving.

Proven track record in active collaboration with R&D and non-R&D functions.

Proven experience in leading multi-functional and multi-cultural teams, virtually.

Demonstrated experience on organizational development and implementation of company wide productivity program strategies. Key competences include several of the following: Cross-functional leadership, portfolio management, consumer validation strategies, budget management, risk management and accustomed to working in lean organizations with demanding business challenges.

Aware and basic understanding of registration requirements in major countries including regulatory, safety and toxicology.

Physical Demands/Requirements

Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time

Ability to occasionally travel to assigned regions – domestic and internationally. This will require frequent sitting for an extended period of time

Ability to routinely follow policies and procedure related to company practices and safety procedures

Ability to operate various office equipment and/or machinery

Description of Work Environment/Conditions

Ability to perform assigned and sometime extended work hours (early mornings or late nights to accommodate connection with global partners) in order to meet the job responsibilities of the role

Individual will be exposed to working in or around a lab environment or pilot plant ops with various equipment, machinery and chemicals. Safety precautions must be adhered to and followed at all times
