Human Resources, in partnership with the University community, supports the mission of Wesleyan University by providing services and programs that attract, develop, and retain a highly qualified and diverse workforce.

The Assistant Vice President for Human Resources reports to the Associate Vice President for Human Resources.

The position is specifically responsible for employee and labor relations and various aspects of HR operations, will directly supervise one or more functional areas of human resources, and will provide department leadership in the absence of the Associate Vice President.

The position will also coordinate internal communications for the Finance and Administration division.

Responsibilities include:

LABOR/EMPLOYEE RELATIONS

Provide guidance to senior leaders, managers, administrative and bargaining unit staff for employee and labor relations and interpretation of HR policy and the University’s three union contracts.

Manage and serve as point of contact for annual labor contract negotiations. Research and develop University proposals, analyze cost impact, and draft revised agreements. Ensure the implementation of agreements.

Oversee the grievance process and work collaboratively with unions to address issues at pre-grievance level.

Consult with managers and supervisors on performance plans and documentation of corrective action, ensuring fair, effective and legal processes.

Provide recruitment consultation and guidance to the Associate Director for Talent Acquisition for bargaining unit positions.

Provide education for supervisors and management staff on successful strategies for working with bargaining unit staff.

Partner with Title IX staff to conduct investigations as needed.

HR OPERATIONS

Provide leadership to help achieve the mission of human resources.

Provide guidance to the HR team in all functional areas to grow and develop specific skills as needed.

Direct the maintenance of departmental record keeping and document destruction.

Monitor and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to the HR function.

Recommend and implement policy and process changes as needed.

Oversee the talent acquisition and/or professional development functional area depending on areas of expertise.

Oversee departmental functions and serve as point of contact in the absence of the AVP-HR.

Oversee HR’s communications to the campus.

HR ANALYTICS SYSTEMS AND SECURITY

Prepare data on various organizational and departments metrics. Conduct analysis, prepare reports, and make recommendations to improve HR services based on data, best practices, and cultural expectations.

Provide University data for annual salary surveys. Complete analyses and reports as requested.

Maintain the department’s market salary data software.

Research and recommend opportunities for HR to utilize technology to better capture relevant data.

Provide leadership and direction to improve HR systems and security and serve on university committees in these areas as requested.

DIVISION SUPPORT

Coordinate communication, including website regarding policy and process changes to the campus community on behalf of the Finance and Administration division.

OTHER

Special projects as assigned.

Represent the HR department on university committees as requested.

Actively engage with the university community by attending university activities/events as requested.

Attend professional development opportunities to strengthen personal knowledge in specific content areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years in labor and employee relations and minimum of 7 years HR experience in a leadership role or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Successful experience with union negotiations and working collaboratively with bargaining units and union representatives.

Demonstrated success managing HR metrics and analyzing data to improve HR functions.

Specific experience in talent acquisition and/or professional development .

Proven ability to analyze and interpret Human Resources policies and practices.

Must have a record of assessing current practices, identifying improvements and achieving successful outcomes .

Project management experience and exceptional communication skills.

A talent for action and process improvement is highly desirable for this role .

Demonstrated knowledge of current employment laws and regulations and Human Resources administration concepts .

Demonstrated knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint .

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency in Qualtrics or other survey tools. SPHR or PHR certification.
