International Education Services
The Director will lead the University’s efforts to provide exemplary services to international students, scholars, employees and their dependents. This includes the development, assessment and expansion of initiatives focused on student yield, retention and success. Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for International Education, the Director will work collaboratively with various academic and administrative units to continuously evaluate and enhance services for international students, scholars, employees and their dependents. The Director will be responsible for institutional compliance with federal immigration regulations and provide support for comprehensive internationalization initiatives.
Provides leadership and direction to UMBC’s International Student and Scholar Services team. This includes staff supervision, development of departmental policies and procedures as well as oversight of advising, counseling and other services offered to international students, scholars, employees and their dependents regarding personal, financial, academic, cultural, social, and immigration issues and concerns.
- Maintains expert knowledge to interpret and provide guidance on federal immigration regulations impacting international students, scholars, employees, and their dependents.
- Continuously improves and evaluates ISSS programs, services, and other initiatives for overall impact and alignment with institutional goals and objectives. This includes prioritization of international student yield, retention and success.
- Collaborates with academic and administrative units on issues pertaining to international students, scholars, employees and their dependents. This includes serving on various campus committees and engaging with local community organizations, as assigned.
- Serves as the primary liaison between UMBC constituents and various state and federal government agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Motor Vehicle Administration, the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of State.
- Oversees international student and scholar orientation programs, immigration workshops, International Education Week programming, and other ISSS events.
- Advocates on behalf of international students, scholars, employees and their dependents.
- Manages the ISSS operating budget in accordance with departmental and institutional policies. This includes budget preparation, monitoring, and reconciliation as well as assessment of fees.
- Ensures proper administration and maintenance of ISSS administrative systems, including SEVIS batch processes, and validation of institutional data pertaining to international students, scholars, employees and their dependents.
- Assists Associate Vice Provost with special projects, strategic initiatives, and reporting. Represents the Associate Vice Provost during his or her absence.
Requires a Master’s degree and five years of related work experience in an international education office at a college or university. Position requires eligibility to serve as a Principal/Designated School Official and Alternate/Responsible Officer. Per federal immigration regulations regarding SEVIS, the incumbent must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
Position may be required to travel within the United States and abroad.
Note: Position will be required to work some evenings and weekends.
