The Community Oncology Alliance (COA), a national cancer advocacy organization, is seeking a communications professional to join our team as the Deputy Director or Senior Manager of Communications. This role will help lead and execute external and member communications strategies with the guidance of the Director of Communications.
COA is a leading advocate for our nation’s cancer care system, and the communications team is central to supporting COA’s mission of protecting and defending independent, community oncology. The communications team’s responsibilities include high-level, strategic communications planning, day-to-day media relations (including proactive earned media outreach, managing incoming requests, writing/submitting op-eds), thought leadership, member communications, marketing, and much more.
The ideal candidate for this role will have at least five (5) full years of proven communications or public relations experience, with strong writing and editing skills. It is important they have the maturity to work independently, good judgment, the capacity to stay organized, and manage multiple projects, all in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- In coordination with the Director of Communications, develop and oversee comprehensive external and member communications strategies for organization and initiatives.
- Regularly write and edit a wide variety of materials, including media materials (press releases, statements, op-eds), reports, web content, marketing copy, and more.
- Manage media relations, including coordinating incoming and outgoing (earned) media opportunities; writing of press releases and statements. Work directly with media and/or vendors, as necessary.
- Implement digital and social media strategies to grow presence, engagement, and traffic across COA’s digital channels.
- Support the production and publication of COA’s monthly newsletter, annual report, regular member updates, and other marketing campaigns.
- Oversee the development of videos, photos, and other multimedia products to support our mission, including our nationwide waiting room TV network.
- Provide communications support to our patient and practice advocacy activities, including our national patient advocacy network.
- Collaborate with our external vendors and agencies.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in communications and/or public relations.
- Proven verbal and written communications skills. Ability to write and edit at a superior level is an absolute must.
- Experience with Federal policymaking, health policy and/or cancer care issues is strongly preferred.
- Disciplined professional who can work effectively within a virtual organization and remote structure.
- Team player who can build and leverage effective partnerships and relationships.
- Proactive and innovative thinker who is not afraid to lead. The ideal candidate will be relied upon to independently come up with and drive projects to successful completion.
- Must understand and embrace digital and social media. Bonus for understanding web development, analytics, and CRM systems.
Location & Travel
- Role based in Washington D.C., with potential for remote work from home in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic.
- Approximately 25% travel, mostly to Washington D.C. and Virginia Beach, with other domestic locations, as needed.
