Position Focus:

Reporting to the Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development and serving as a key member of the senior leadership team, manages and provides strategic oversight of and guidance to a number of fundraising units in the Office of Development including Major Gifts, Prospect Research, Planned Giving, Annual Giving, Reunion Giving and Leadership Giving – a staff of over 100 employees.

Working with University leadership and development colleagues, serves as a strategic partner in setting the overall direction for Yale’s fundraising efforts, with a particular focus on individual giving in the context of a capital campaign. Specific responsibilities include: develop multi-year and multi-prong strategies to ensure successful fundraising outcomes and increase gift revenue; work effectively with colleagues across the university to align university needs and priorities with gift opportunities; manage, mentor, and guide a team of high-level directors in their fundraising work and activities, encouraging collaboration and interaction among teams and individual staff members; set and achieve robust fundraising goals; assess organizational effectiveness of teams, making changes as needed; maintain and strengthen relationships with key volunteers, enhancing volunteer engagement and ensuring that volunteer resources and tools are robust and effective; lead efforts to identify and cultivate new donors; devise and implement strategies to provide professional development for staff and to encourage their highest level of performance; promote productive relationships between Yale’s prospects/donors and the President, University Officers, Trustees, development staff, faculty and volunteer leaders; collaborates closely with the Yale Alumni Association; help develop and disseminate fundraising policies and procedures; and serve as the primary contact for fundraising issues for various groups across campus.

Essential Duties

1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures; 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and ten years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

An excellent track record of managing, inspiring, leading and directing a large and complex staff including frontline fundraisers as well as managers and other staff with an emphasis on building a strong and collaborative team effort.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven success in cultivating, soliciting and closing gifts. Demonstrated effectiveness in recruiting effective volunteer leaders and in guiding and supporting volunteer efforts.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Superb organizational, interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and successfully in a fast-paced environment with professionalism and a sense of humor. Ability to deal with sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Willingness to travel.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Ten years of fundraising experience. Experience serving as a strategic leader in an educational setting and familiarity with the mission of a large, complex university. Knowledge of or experience in a fundraising campaign strongly preferred.
