The Roebling Museum, which tells the story of American bridge building, immigrant entrepreneurship, and technological innovation, seeks an energetic, creative and goal-oriented Executive Director to help our museum grow.

Opened in 2009 in a historic building in the former company town of Roebling, New Jersey, the Roebling Museum documents, preserves and interprets the history of the John A. Roebling’s Sons Company, bridge builders, engineers, and steelmakers; the company town, and the people who lived and worked there. The Museum illuminates the Roebling history of technological innovation and its role in the transformation of the nation during the Industrial Age. The Museum maintains permanent and changing exhibits in its six galleries and hosts regular public programs, book talks, children’s educational programs, and tours of Roebling sites and suspension bridges.

The Museum Executive Director will:

Mission:

With the Board of Directors, create and execute the long and short-term goals and objectives for the organization outlined in the strategic plan.

With the Finance Committee, develop a yearly budget; work with staff and Treasurer to maintain all financial records and conduct a yearly review with outside professional.

Plan and execute the slate of monthly public lectures, children’s educational programs, special events, and, with the help of the camp director and seasonal staff, the annual Emily Roebling STEM Summer Camp.

With the help of the Exhibits & Collections Committee, conceive, plan and execute temporary exhibits in the Museum’s two rotating galleries and media room. Work with the volunteer archivist to ensure the Museum’s collection is conserved, preserved, and catalogued.

Development:

Search out and apply for project and operating grants, event underwriting and business sponsorships. Nurture existing relationships with New Jersey state grantmakers, private foundations, corporations and local businesses. Track awarded grants and execute required reporting.

Nurture relations with donors. Execute fundraising events and the annual fundraising campaign. Manage membership renewals and outreach with the goal of increasing membership.

Operations:

Oversee daily operation of the Museum, which is open to the public March-December with frequent programs and events.

With the administrative assistant, perform ongoing daily financial management and reporting. as well as long-term planning and reporting.

Manage the Museum’s part-time administrator and a corps of 15-20 volunteers who perform front desk and docent duties. Recruit and train volunteers, and ensure adequate staffing is maintained for the museum’s daily operation and special events.

Oversee maintenance, preservation and safe operation of our century-old historic structure and grounds.

Communication and Publicity:

Promote the museum and its events through listings, earned media, targeted outreach and a robust Facebook and Instagram presence. Communicate regularly with members through the museum newsletter and blast emails. Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Museum with media and the public.

The Roebling Museum is located 40 minutes from Philadelphia, 20 minutes from Trenton and 30 minutes from Princeton, and accessible by public transit.

This is a full time, salaried position that requires evening and weekend hours. B.A. required, M.A. in a museum field preferred. Museum employment experience required.

  • Experience with and knowledge of museum best practices and professional standards in administration, fundraising, finances, and collections and exhibits.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in fundraising, grants management, and donor solicitations.
  • High level of communication skills with strong writing ability.
  • Excellent self-management and project management skills. Attention to detail, mad multitasking skills, and an ability to juggle deadlines without undue drama.
  • An engaging style that makes friends of visitors, supporters of friends, and major donors of supporters.
