The Business Enterprise Media Relations Director opportunity will have oversight of strategic and tactical communications/media relations priorities for business enterprise efforts. Owns portfolio of responsibilities as well as leadership role for four direct reports. Portfolio includes Corporate Alliances, Sponsorships, Development, Cancer Network and Houston Area Locations.
The ideal candidate will have at least ten years in communications with a solid background in a hospital or patient care setting to include business/development and medical topics specific to media and public relations.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Strategic direction and oversight
Successful performance will include:
- The cultivation of strong, positive relationships with executives, employees, colleagues, patients and other constituents;
- Management of successful PR efforts that are aligned with MD Anderson’s strategic goals, Institutional Advancement and Communications Office goals, and our institutional brand standards;
- Leadership and direction of MD Anderson’s Business Enterprise PR team;
- Tapping into extensive media relationships for story placement on a national level;
- Leads national medical/business meeting efforts and coordinates media activity, including onsite support, as needed;
- Development of comprehensive communications for relevant areas;
- Prompt and accurate response and routing of beat needs;
- Knowledge and implementation of departmental resources (media list database, release distribution platform, agency support, etc.);
- Collaboration with IA colleagues to enhance content creation and sharing, message consistency and full integration;
- Ensuring patient information protection in communications, such as in accordance with HIPAA;
- Following and reporting on media interests, trends in coverage and issues;
- Ensuring brand compliance of all written and visual collateral of, and for, constituents;
- Monitoring and success measurement of efforts.
Relationship management and consultation
Serves as frontline contact for institutional leaders. Elevates urgent or priority information to relevant contacts to ensure team is informed and the institution is promoted and protected at all times. Develops and facilitates thought leadership platforms for key leaders.
Maintains close relationships with media contacts (local and national) and develops new relationships to advance efforts.
Fosters strong working relationship with ED of PR and other PR directors. Continuously works to support and grow Business Enterprise team members while helping to develop relationships among PR team as a whole. Integrates with other Institutional Advancement peers to maximize distribution of PR content via earned, owned and paid channels.
Attends all relevant meetings for IA and institutional work areas with a goal of meeting new people and exploring opportunities.
Works closely with PR agency to advance key initiatives and provide appropriate support for announcement, media training, events, milestones, issues, etc.
Measurement and analytics
Tracks and analyzes PR efforts on an ongoing basis to make informed decisions about next steps and success measurements. Works with ED of PR to provide regular metrics reports to leadership.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience:
Required: Ten years of experience working in a communications program to include five years of supervisory/management experience. With preferred degree, eight years of required experience.
Preferred : Experience covering business/development and medical topics with a background in media/public relations. Experience managing up to an eight-person team in a public relations agency or large healthcare company.
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.
Preferred :Master’s degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.
