The primary duties and responsibilities of the *Assistant Director and Career Coach for the College of Arts and Sciences* include: * Provide career coaching, education and outreach to students, alumni, and faculty. * Provide career development and job search coaching to students and alumni in both individual and group settings. * Develop a general knowledge and understanding of the programs of study offered at Appalachian, and maintain familiarity with the education, training and career opportunities and expectations of those assigned degree programs. * Develop expertise in the offering of the College of Arts and Sciences and knowledge of employment opportunities related to those disciplines. * Create and maintain exceptional working relationships with chairs and faculty as a means to integrate career education into the academic curriculum. This will include workshops and presentations to classes, student clubs, and organizations, as well as faculty presentations and education. * Serve as liaison to student organizations and administrative units as determined by the director. * Communicate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty, organizations, and students. * Facilitate the Peace Corps Prep Program and serve as program coordinator. * Work with the Employer Relations team to plan, coordinate and implement employer development activities including employer visitations, on-campus employer engagement opportunities, Career Treks, and on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads. * Research, evaluate & maintain online resources for a variety of career issues, academic majors and career fields. * Provide representation in various university committees and university-wide events to enhance awareness and visibility of the Career Development Center. * Learn, use and promote Handshake, the online career management system, among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. * Provide consultation and organization assistance to departments in their development of major-specific career-related events. * Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations such as the Southeastern Association of Colleges & Employers (SoACE) and the North Carolina Association of Colleges & Employers (NCACE). * Collaborate on the development and enhancement of Career Development Center web sites and Handshake; integrate technology into daily operations, programs and presentations. * Actively engage in professional development to stay abreast of trends and research-based best practices both in the field of higher education, human resources management, and career services. * Teach career planning courses as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Master?s Degree in Student Development, Student Personnel, Higher Education, Education, Counseling or related field. * Knowledge of career development theory and assessment. * 2 or more years of experience in a college career office, counseling center, advising center, student services office, or equivalent experience providing direct services to students. * Strong technical proficiency and experience with career-related software, word processing, database, and desktop publishing applications * A demonstrated understanding of career development issues for college students and alumni, and an ability to provide career coaching on these issues in individual and group settings. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills for one-on-one and group interaction with various constituencies including students, faculty, parents, and administrators. * Classroom presentations are required of this position thus strong presentation skills are expected. * Demonstrated ability to develop and foster strong professional relationships with faculty, staff, and employers. * Strong organization, research, planning, and problem-solving skills. * Exceptional time management skills. * Analytical skills required to effectively assess program goals and student learning goals.
