Zendesk is looking for an experienced VP of Engineering to lead the critical shared components of our products.


The Zendesk product family has expanded over the years organically and through acquisition. In recent years, we’ve invested heavily to ensure that all of our products work seamlessly together in order to ensure a consistent and effortless customer experience. Through these efforts, we have built a number of foundation services which are instrumental to the ongoing success of our products and in the future should enable rapid innovation/integration.


Working with engineering, product and business leaders globally, this role will require your team to deliver with predictable cadence reliable services that our internal teams can depend upon. In order to achieve that, you’ll need to mentor and grow a senior management team that can methodically manage the large scope of engineering challenges which exist within your department. You’ll also be required to strongly partner with leaders across the organization to ensure that we’re building the right shared services at the right time (not an easy feat).


This role will be located in San Francisco, reporting directly to our global VP of Engineering.


What you bring to the role:


  • Work with Feature and Platform Engineering leaders globally to align on a shared global technology roadmap.


  • Partner with Product Management, Engineering, and Operations on the give-and-take of living product roadmaps.


  • Hire and direct senior staff members to acquire necessary resources to meet scheduled commitments.


  • Focus the team on delivering value to our customers quickly, measuring the impact, and iterating on features in order to deliver business value.


  • Communicate progress and key decisions broadly within the organization.


  • Foster internally and share publicly a culture of engineering excellence.


  • Enable training programs to ensure that our next generation of leaders come from within.


  • Enable your team to reach a point where they can deliver in a predictable fashion.


  • Nerd out with your team and hear about how they are using and creating open source technologies to solve hard problems at scale.


  • Prioritize what is right for Zendesk in the long term to ensure that our product family works seamlessly together.
