Scattergood Friends School and Farm seeks an innovative and experienced educational leader to serve as our next Head of School, beginning July 1, 2020. Scattergood is a small progressive college-preparatory high school boarding school located outside Iowa City, and will soon be opening a middle school for day students. Owned by Iowa Yearly Meeting (Conservative) since the school’s inception in 1890, the school operates on Quaker principles, though currently staff and students alike are 80% non-Quaker. Many classes are experiential and integrate the use of a restored prairie, pastures, a pond, and an organic farm, which also provides much of the school’s food each year. The Head of School should be a good listener, comfortable in making difficult decisions, be able to draw the sense of a meeting, inspire staff and students, model and encourage collaboration within the school community, be a timely decision-maker and communicator, model premises of Quaker education and practice, enjoy adolescents and fostering the growth of the whole person, and be a life-long learner.

Primary Responsibilities

This position is responsible for day-to-day management of community, professional, and academic life at the school. Familiarity with the policies and practices required by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, Friends Council on Education, and The Association of Boarding Schools is necessary.

Qualifications preferred:

· Advanced degree in education and/or leadership

· Experience teaching secondary level students

· Be current in education topics and adolescent development

· Experience in employing and evaluating staff

· Appreciation for Quaker education, practices and values

· Commitment to inclusion: cultural, racial, gender diversity

· Have strong administrative, business and financial skills

· Communicate clearly and timely

· Experience in managing change

· Accomplished in development, advancement and conveying a compelling vision
