Purpose of Position

Why does the job exist?

The Elk Program Manager coordinates the DepartmentÂżs statewide elk management program.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities of the job include designing protocols, collecting, compiling, analyzing (statistically and qualitatively) and reporting elk population information. The elk program manager will be responsible for interpreting and discussing trend implications to meet elk management goals. They will use this information to develop and evaluate hunting recommendations. The elk program manager will be responsible for designing projects (both management and research related) to benefit elk statewide.

Who are the customers?

The Elk Program Manager is tasked with developing management recommendations that ensure the long-term persistence of elk populations for both consumptive and non-consumptive users.

Ideal Candidate

At least 30 days of experience working with one or more species of ungulates (deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, pronghorn, moose, caribou, etc.). Masters degree (or higher) in wildlife science or a closely related field. Experience flying aerial surveys in either fixed-wing or rotary (helicopter) aircraft without experiencing nausea that inhibited the candidates ability to conduct the survey. Also, willingness to continue performing aerial surveys. At least 30 days of experience working in backcountry conditions (for example, camping backpacking, hiking, hunting, wildlife tracking, 4×4 mountainous driving, or other related activities).

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology or similar related natural resource degree and two (2) years of experience in the specified fields. Only for use at the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department: Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totally four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work will be performed primarily in an office setting, but on occasion will be performed in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions. Weekend and varied hours occasionally will be required for this position. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and operate computers and photography equipment.
