Summary:
The Director of Special Projects for First Generation, Limited Income (FLI) Initiatives is responsible for the overall execution for project management strategic initiatives and programs designed to support FLI students and families to not only transition to the university but also connect throughout their time at Johns Hopkins. The Director also stewards relationships with senior leadership and stakeholders to ensure FLI initiatives maximize their potential. Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Success, the Director provides leadership for projects related to the strengthening the academic, personal, and social success of FLI undergraduate students. The Director serves all FLI students on the Homewood campus (5,400 undergraduate students total).

Essential Job Functions

FLI Student Initiative Operations (20%)

Support the Executive Director of Student Success in leading the operations of the FLI initiative in close consultation and collaboration with the Deans, Vice Deans, Directors, and a variety of offices across the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering along with Homewood Student Affairs and the Provost’s Office.

Acts as a key adviser to the Executive Director of Student Success. Identify and brief the Executive Director on key issues requiring special knowledge and understanding of programs, initiatives, goals, and objectives beyond day-to-day operational knowledge.

Ensures matters requiring the Executive Director of Student Success’s attention are developed, researched, and evaluated thoroughly before presentation.

Serve as a conduit for information both to the Executive Director as well as to other key stakeholders.

Stay current on contemporary issues of the day in higher education as it relates to FLI students.

Project Management (50%)

Independently manage critical, timely, and important short-term and long-term special projects on behalf of the Executive Director of Student Success.

Assume responsibility for keeping broad FLI initiatives on-track and completed in a timely manner. This includes working directly with university administration and faculty to obtain and track pertinent, and frequently confidential and sensitive information.

Provide the strategic support for initiatives related to FLI students’ academic experiences.

Support efforts related to academic preparation and academic support for FLI students.

Develops staff engagement plans for colleagues focused on working with FLI students.

Represent FLI Initiative (20%)

Builds and stays in close working relationship and coordination with a wide range of offices and staff internal and external to the University.

Independently represents the FLI initiative and the needs of FLI students at internal or external meetings.

Interact with members of the university administration and leadership of the schools on matters related to the FLI initiative.

Attend meetings, gather information, represent the FLI initiative and the Executive Director of Student Success, make decisions as appropriate.

Department Search Committee Support (5%)

Collaborate with administrative leadership with searches related to the FLI initiative.

Assistant the Executive Director of Student Success and collaborate with other leaders, including academic leadership in undergraduate education.

Communications (5%)

Work in collaboration with Development and Alumni Relations to provide updates to philanthropic foundations and other donors.

Advise the Executive Director of Student Success on invitations, speaking engagements, and professional commitments.

Coordinate all media requests (internal and external).

Work with autonomy and respect the vital nature of collaboration and partnership.

Leverage outstanding writing skills to draft reports, presentations, and other written materials.

Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.

Education:
Master’s degree in the field of higher education, or related area required.

Ph.D. preferred.

Experience:
Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in a related field, preferably in higher education.

Proven track record of establishing strategic relationships to strengthen program and service delivery.

Strong interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, problem solving and listening skills.

NOTE: The Director responsibilities requires evening and weekend hours.

During the Influenza (“the flu”) season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
