The SRE Leader will join Couchbase’s cloud leadership team to lead the newly formed Cloud Operations Teams and help build the function within the Cloud organization. The SRE team is responsible for the availability and support of the service to customers by performing full-stack observability, level one alerting. reliability engineering and incident response for Couchbase’s cloud organization. In this role, you will set the strategy and operational KPI’s for the SRE organization and the applications supported by the cloud organization. Partnering with our engineering leadership and cloud leadership, you will work to build our Service level indicators (SLI), Service Level Objectives (SLO), Service level agreements (SLA’s) and Error budgets for our services. As part of this role, you will lead customer escalations and will build a close relationship with our engineering and product organizations.
Responsibilities
- The Director of Cloud Engineering will lead and manage the software development team responsible for Couchbase’s Cloud products. The leader will be responsible for the development, documentation, and testing of software plus its staging, release to production, and work closely with the Operations team to ensure availability, reliability and serviceability of the offering. The team is highly distributed, with engineers spanning the world in each area team that makes up the entire Cloud team.

- Provide leadership and growth for a team of software engineers, guiding them toward successful and timely completion of various product development projects
- Rapidly scale our cloud engineering team over the next few years, while keeping a focus on diversity
- Shape the organization, identify areas where new leadership is required
- Advocate for strong engineering practices, maintainable software, and operations-friendly behavior of the software
- Be engaged and understand what individuals are working on, drive execution of the roadmap, maintain credibility with engineers, and participate in technical discussions
- Lead the architecture, design and implementation of product features.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience leading engineering teams responsible for developing and deploying infrastructure platforms
- 6 or more years of experience in software engineering, SRE, or DevOps roles
- Intermediate to advanced coding experience with one or more of the following programming languages: Typescript, Javascript, React, Python, Java C/C++, Go
- Advanced Experience with Amazon Web Services-based infrastructure and management including, but not limited to Route 53, ALB, EC2, CloudFormation, CloudWatch, Lambda, VPC, ECS, IAM, S3, etc
- Experience with Kubernetes, Monitoring softwares like Datadog, NewRelic, Prometheus
- Detailed knowledge of core internet and networking protocols including, but not limited to TCP/IP, DNS, and HTTP
- Proficient working with Terraform, Chef, Salt, or other configuration management tools
- Proficient with version control systems (Git, TFS, SVN)
- Experience applying security best practices to application, system, and public cloud infrastructure
- Experience integrating with commercial and open source monitoring and telemetry platforms
- Experience managing commercial and open source data platforms (relational and NoSQL)
- Experience developing or integrating Chaos Engineering tool chains or methodologies
- Must have a DevOps mindset
- Strong performance management
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible
- Participate in software and infrastructure platform performance analysis, compute capacity planning, and service continuity validation.
- BS/BE/Masters in Computer Science
