Job-Specific Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
Financial Management
Financial Management
- Directs financial analysis processes across business-critical systems, and proactively resolves strategic issues that may span multiple areas.
- Performs both regular and ad hoc strategic and quantitative analysis, and provides leadership with problem-specific analysis to inform decision making.
- Develops and implements strategies for: budgeting; forecasting, modeling & projecting; identifying & explaining variances; financial reporting; internal controls; expense reductions; cost containment; and revenue enhancements.
- Develops and maintains forecasting model for capital and/or operating budgets, develop long-range financial forecast, and develop capital and operating performance targets.
- Partners with the Office of the CIO and HBS Finance leadership on multi-year financial plans and capital budgeting process.
- Acts as the primary liaison between HBS IT and the HBS Finance Office.
- Ensures high levels of customer service by providing professional, timely, and accurate financial management to stakeholders as needed.
- Creates and presents materials to wide variety of stakeholders with varying degrees of financial acumen. Ability to present data strategically and clearly is a must.
- Ensures financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
Contract Management and Administration
- Administers and manages contract relationships with IT consulting services, contractors, and assorted hardware and software vendors.
- Oversees contract process for HBS IT, developing and refining procedures for contract procurement and administration.
- Liaises between HBS IT and Harvard University’s Strategic Procurement office.
- In conjunction with HU Strategic Procurement and the HUIT Vendor Management Office, ensures contracts are negotiated and maintained at the optimum cost and benefit for HBS within budget.
- Oversees ongoing contract maintenance and resolution of business issues associated with contract terms.
Space Planning
- Directs staff member who oversees initiatives related to improving existing spaces and designing new space solutions.
- Oversees strategic plans for space utilization, balancing short and long-term needs for HBS IT.
Staff Management
- Responsible for effective staff management for a team of employees, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.
- Provides ongoing staff mentoring and training.
Typical Core Duties

- Direct multiple financial operations and provide strategic financial leadership
- Determine strategic direction of department by establishing goals and implementing new initiatives; develop and implement financial policies and procedures
- Guide the development of highly complex annual budget(s), including specialized financial analysis and modeling
- Serve as a key resource for staff on strategic financial operational planning
- Select and manage ongoing relationships with, external consultants and advisors
- Collaborate with University-wide finance leadership to develop financial processes, policies and procedures
- Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
- Minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience
- Supervisory experience
Additional Qualifications
- MBA, Master’s degree or equivalent work experience Preferred
- Minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience
- Demonstrated work experience in an IT services organization, preferably within an academic institution similar in size and scope of challenges such as HBS
- Strong analytical, project management, and organization skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Advanced Excel skills
- Advanced knowledge of budget management, financial and managerial accounting principles, and financial analysis and modeling
- Demonstrated experience with financial systems and data query tools
- Strong understanding of procurement and contract management processes
- Experiencing in managing and reviewing IT contracts
- Experience managing, mentoring, and developing staff
- Demonstrated ability to work as a productive member of the leadership team
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- An able and effective change agent with proven success of facilitating organizational change
- Collaborative and flexible style, with a willingness to share information and a strong service mentality
- ITIL certification(s) desired
- Higher Education experience desirable
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in an office setting, but eligible for flexible working arrangement after orientation period and exemplary performance established
