General Description

The Assistant Director of Foundation Relations will help secure and steward funding from private foundations for the benefit of Johns Hopkins University and Health System, and will report to the Director of Foundation Relations for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

The Assistant Director will manage a portfolio of foundations relevant to Johns Hopkins Medicine partner hospitals and select departments in the School of Medicine as “primary relationship manager,” keeping up-to-date about their missions and priorities, and ensuring that any opportunities for funding consideration are seized.

The Assistant Director will also add capacity to the central Foundation Relations team by managing select strategic opportunities across the institution that are below $100,000.

Responsibilities

Participate in the development of strategies and innovations to advance the work of the Foundation Relations office and enhance its value to the University and Health System.

Work in partnership with the Foundation Relations team to maximize foundation revenues with a focus on Johns Hopkins Medicine partner hospitals: Sibley Memorial, Howard County General, Johns Hopkins All Children’s and Suburban Hospital and other select School of Medicine Departments.

This includes proactively conducting research to identify foundation prospects both individually and in concert with the Senior Development Coordinator of Foundation Relations that are aligned with the position’s assigned portfolio; developing cultivation and proposal solicitation strategies in collaboration with unit-based gift officers from the schools and departments in support of relevant development priorities ; working with faculty to develop or refine their proposal ideas; preparing visit and site visit briefings for faculty and leadership; consulting with foundation staff and officials; writing concept papers, LOIs, proposals and reports; and staffing faculty and leadership as appropriate.

Manage a portfolio of foundations and maximize opportunities to match their interests with institutional needs.

Develop and be responsible for meeting annual work plan metrics related to solicitations and dollars raised.

Monitor external sources of foundation news and information relevant to portfolio.

Provide support to faculty and Johns Hopkins development colleagues with strategic foundation opportunities which provide support cumulative support below $100,000.

Conduct intermittent travel as necessary to meet with development colleagues or foundation staff/leadership.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience required, three years of related experience preferred). Experience should include research, proposal development and/or grant writing. Academic experience preferred.

Exceptional writing skills (writing samples will be required of finalists for this position)

Strong analytical and organizational skills
