Healthcare Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance Program

Job Overview:

The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a Medical Director for the statewide Healthcare Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program in Nashville, TN. This position reports directly to the State Epidemiologist. Primary responsibilities involve oversight of programs related to HAI/AR prevention and outbreak / containment response. Oversee infection preventionists and epidemiologists, act as liaison to healthcare facilities, utilize data to guide program and policy development, and provide clinical and programmatic oversight for the implementation of all related prevention and outbreak response activities.

The Medical Director must possess substantial management and leadership skills.

Duties include: Active participation in CDC and multi-state projects, grant writing and management, representing the department in statewide and national professional forums, and interaction with the public, media, and the medical community.

This program is in the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP). The Division includes a wide range of programs, including immunizations, HIV/STD/Viral hepatitis, TB, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and general communicable diseases.

Job duties will include:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate public health programs to reduce HAI infections across a variety of healthcare settings.
  • Serve as liaison with local health departments, state and national government agencies, and academic and community-based providers regarding HAI-related issues.
  • Conduct data analyses, surveillance, and investigation of healthcare-associated infections.
  • Oversee the preparation of state and federal funding applications.
  • Manage 20 epidemiologists, infection preventionists, pharmacists and administrative staff.

Desired Qualification:

  • M.D. with U.S. medical license.
  • Experience in the field of infectious disease.
  • Experience in infection control, healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, and/ or stewardship.
  • Work experience in public health.
  • Three or more years of full-time supervisory work.
  • Experience preparing grant applications and managing budgets.
  • Strong oral and written communication, program management and leadership skills.
