Elkton Area United Services is accepting resumes from qualified candidates for the position of Executive Director. Headquartered in Elkton, Virginia, Elkton Area United Services serves the community by providing basic needs for a population where half the households are Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed (ALICE). The Executive Director provides overall executive leadership of the organization in accordance with the direction, policies, and objectives set by the Board. Work is performed under the general direction of the Elkton Area United Services Board of Directors through the President of the Board and Executive Committee.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Elkton Area United Services Executive Director serves as the pivotal interface within Rockingham County and Virginia non-profit communities. The role provides overall executive leadership of the organization in accordance with the direction, policies, and objectives set by the Board.

Current responsibilities include resource development, supervision and mentoring of paid staff, maintenance and enhancement of the agency infrastructure, serving as the primary communication link among directors, committees, and volunteers, networks with stakeholders in the community, and establishes an efficient client facing atmosphere with emphasis on client compassion and service. Current programs include emergency assistance, food pantry, dental, Meals at Heart, Stock the Rock school supply drive, GED classes, traveler’s aid, senior citizen activities, family and social services, and retail store management.

  • Develop, organize, coordinate and oversee the administrative, financial and construction functions of the organization. Includes day-to-day operations, budgeting, long-range planning, and human resources
  • Hire, train and manage board-approved staff positions. Administer HR policies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Board and its committees by attending all board meetings, providing monthly board meeting agendas in consultation with the president and orienting and training of new board members
  • Propose goals and strategies for the agency and communicate approved goals and plans throughout organization
  • Consult with operational committee chairs and management staff to determine feasibility, timing and potential barriers to successfully implementing plans
  • Direct preparation of financial and program reports and regularly report to relevant committees and the Board of Directors
  • Proactively encourage visibility of Elkton Area United Services through media relations and public speaking engagements in the community
  • Provide support and guidance to the various Elkton Area United Services committees to ensure their effectiveness and to assist them in meeting the growth and development goals of the agency.
  • Continuously monitor and report on progress toward operational goals: land development, construction, program expansion and Thrift at Heart store expansion
  • Provide general oversight of budget and agency financial matters, direct the executive committee in annual budget development, and advise the board and finance committee of budget issues and future needs. Approves all operational and building expenditures
  • Coordinate work plans and availability of staff and volunteers to ensure strong team dynamic and effective, continuous coverage of programs and activities
  • Direct and coordinate formulation of programs to provide funding for new or continuing operations, including oversight of all fundraising and development
  • Direct the development of a strategic approach to fundraising. Execute time-bound plans for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual, corporate, foundation and faith donor
  • Research grants that are available to the agency. Write, implement and coordinate grants.
  • Plan for, and anticipate, resource needs and reallocations as needed. Negotiate on behalf of the agency with external resources including governments and private business
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with community organizations, foundations and other charitable giving organizations
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies

Time Commitment:

Full-time, exempt position with night and weekend activities, as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of five (5) years of related experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Quickbooks a plus
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and collaboratively towards organizational management and program development
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration or non-profit Management
  • Master’s Degree
  • One (1) year of executive-level experience
  • Major gift cultivation experience.

  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug screen
  • Must not be present on the National Sex Offender List
  • Must not have any legal judgments or garnishments pending
